We're still smiling after a very special evening at Cork City Hall yesterday! ♥️🤍

We were honoured (and more than a little stunned!) to receive the Lord Mayor's Community & Voluntary Award in the Arts, Culture & Heritage category!

The award itself means a great deal, but what we'll remember most is being in a room full of people from across Cork who spend their days making our city a better place: through arts, community development, education, advocacy, inclusion, care, sport and so many other forms of service.

From the brilliant Barrack Street Brass Band playing throughout the evening, to hearing the stories of individuals and organisations working tirelessly in their communities, it was a powerful reminder of just how much good happens across Cork every day.

We're proud that Graffiti's work with children and young people is part of Cork's story. For 20 years in Blackpool, we've had the privilege of working with young people, families, schools, crèches, artists, volunteers, and supporters who believe that creativity belongs to everyone.

Thank you to our mystery nominator, to Cork City Council and to the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Fergal Dennehy. To be recognised alongside so many inspiring organisations and individuals working to make Cork a better place was a real honour. ♥️🤍

This beautiful award, painted by local artist Sue Nelson, belongs to a very big community 💛

P.S. We were delighted to have our Inclusion Officer and associate artist Donna O'Kenney, Operations & Admin Lead Allyson Frick O'Sullivan, UCC Volunteer and Intern Julka Taylor, and Deputy Director Lynn Canham flying the Graffiti flag and representing us on the night.

🌞 Looking through the jam packed Cork Midsummer Festival brochure, we are bursting with pride that not one, not two but THREE former members of our very own Activate Youth Theatre have theatre pieces in the upcoming festival.

"Youth theatre is the perfect playground and training ground for aspiring theatre makers. So many brilliant creative young people have passed through Graffiti over the years. We're really proud of our Activate alumni who have become professional theatre makers, and also those who have gained a lifelong appreciation of theatre and the arts, no matter the path they have taken." - Niall Cleary, Graffiti’s CEO & Artistic Director

Tom Creed, Al Dalton and Áine Ni Laoghaire all present exciting and visceral pieces that we think are well worth checking out (parking our youth theatre alum bias, we promise!).

Check out Cork Midsummer Festival for the details and get booking because we think these are going to book out fast!

Áine Ni Laoghaire presents 'Housework', her love letter to House music and the women who shaped it, at the CTC Studio at Triskel Arts Centre from 12-13th June

Al Dalton directs Nick Payne's stirring love story with infinite possibilities, 'Constellations' at the Cork Arts Theatre from 17 - 20 June

Tom Creed directs Ray Scannell (another Graffiti playwright!)'s new work as 'The Lost Tapes Of Lydia Howell', premieres at Stack Theatre, MTU Cork School of Music from 19-21 June.

🥳 You can nominate Graffiti Theatre to win €20K… 🥳
It only takes a few minutes to support the work we do!

The AIB Community €1 Million Fund enables customers, the public, and their employees to support the local charities that matter most to them. This year the fund will support 70 local charities across 6 regions.

Graffiti makes theatre and creativity accessible to children and families in Cork who might otherwise face barriers to participation. We create welcoming creative spaces where children and young people feel seen, included, and valued.

We want to provide more opportunities for children and young people to engage with the arts, particularly for those children and young people living with disadvantage by making our programmes accessible, free, or subsidised. We rely on the generosity of funders, private donors, the general public, and funds like the AIB Community Fund.

✏️ What information do you need to nominate Graffiti?
- Your name and email,
- Our name: Graffiti Theatre Company,
- Our Registered Charity No: 20022082,
- Social Theme: Education and Opportunities,
- A brief reason for your nomination.

🗓️ DEADLINE IS FRIDAY JUNE 19TH

An update from Jo after the first week of our Edinburgh-based residency with Starcatchers and the Graffiti Theatre Company team.

Enjoy a little glimpse into our adventure with reflections from Graffiti BEAG artist Jo Dennehy! It was a busy week developing new work and drinking dandelion tea gifted by Herb & Soul Scotland, concluding the week with Festival Family Day National Museums Scotland, which marked the opening of the Edinburgh International Children's Festival. A particular highlight for us was Tufts — a playful performance and puppetry piece by Kerry Cleland, Ben Winger and Kate Wilson. Keep an eye out in the reel for two flamboyant dog handlers and their uncannily lookalike puppet pets! 🐩✨

A little behind the scenes from our first few days with the amazing Starcatchers and Graffiti Theatre Company team ✨

Working between Wester Hailes Library and WHALE Arts in Edinburgh, our resident artists have been diving into materials from the Starcatchers store, experimenting, playing, and exploring new ideas together.

We’re now in Week 10 of our International Residency Exchange, with Graffiti BEAG artists currently spending two inspiring weeks in Edinburgh. The exchange was created to give artists in Edinburgh and Cork valuable time, space, and resources to play, research, reflect, and collaborate.

Alongside studio time, artists have taken part in training opportunities — including a workshop on The Voice of the Baby — as well as ongoing mentorship and support from both partner organisations and our dedicated residency coordinators.

The energy is high, the conversations are flowing, and we’re excited for what’s still to come 💫

Welcome aboard to our new board member!

At Graffiti, we’re very fortunate to have a stellar board of trustees who give their time, wisdom and eagle eyes and ears to keep the Good Ship Graffiti sailing on course. And this year, we have a brand new member joining the crew (we’ll stop with the sailing metaphor now!) as we welcome Katherine Fitzpatrick to the Graffiti board.

Katherine currently works on a variety of exciting projects across Cork city, including as Director of Destination for The VQ, Sustainability Lead for Visit Cork, and was appointed by the British Embassy in Dublin as Honorary Consul for South-West Ireland. Prior to that she was the Director of International Relations at Cork Chamber of Commerce and in addition to all that, she was once a member of our very own Activate Youth Theatre back in its Civic Trust House era!

Niall, our CEO and Artistic Director had this to say: “We are delighted to welcome Katherine to the Graffiti board. As an alumna of our youth theatre, she brings a unique perspective on the lasting impact Graffiti can have on young people’s lives. We are thrilled to have her return to help shape the company’s future with her experience and expertise. Welcome home, Katherine!"

Katherine joins our board at an exciting time in Graffiti’s story as we mark 20 years in our building in Blackpool. She joins a fantastic set of trustees which also includes Ray Boland SC, Yvon Bonenfant, Sarah FizGibbon, Julie Kelleher, Niamh O’Sullivan, Karen O’Sullivan and Karan Thompson.

Julie Kelleher, the Chair of our board added "As Chair of the Board of Graffiti Theatre Company, it gives me great pleasure to welcome Katherine Fitzpatrick to our number. Katherine's unique set of skills and experience, as well as the perspective she brings from within Cork's business community, are a wonderful complement to the existing knowledge and experience on the board. As Chair, I'm hugely grateful to all of our board members who volunteer their time and expertise so willingly, in service of keeping the beacon of light that Graffiti represents for arts in the lives of young people shining!"

Welcome Katherine!

Still thinking about the magic of our Story Slam event 🎤

Write Club Cork would like to give a huge thanks to The Lit Festival for travelling from Waterford and bringing their joy and whimsy, as well as their professionalism and creative bravery.

All of the stories, poems, and songs shone in the amazing atmosphere of the Triskel Arts Centre, who we are so grateful to for hosting us. These gorgeous images from Clare Keogh perfectly capture how special the first Story Slam was ❤️

We are so grateful to everyone who shared a piece of themselves on stage and to everyone who came to listen and support them.

See you at the next slam! 🎤

Thanks to Cork City Libraries and the Cork World Book Festival who welcomed us so readily into their festival programme.

Last but not least we wouldn't have a Write Club Cork without our funders, Amazon Literary Partnership. Thank you 🙌🏼
