Insightful interview with Fiona Quilligan by Dance Ireland:

"A number of things triggered the work I wanted to honour him [James McKenna] and bring his work to the foreground and perhaps show how much he inspired me in my own creative process over a number of years. His incredible vision in realising his figures in many media from bronze, stone, wood. His enthusiasm for supporting my dance work ....he suggested to me once that he wanted dancers to pour out of the body of one of his great wooden horses in movement - a bit like the horse of Troy."

Really looking forward to Window Woman's opening this evening at Smock Alley Theatre. It's been an incredible journey, thanks to all that have made it possible.

Window Woman plays with ideas of duality: from the sensual body to James McKenna’s sculptures, particularly his female warriors of early Irish society, who give and receive the wisdoms of life.

3 shows only. Don't miss the opportunity to catch this new contemporary dance piece by award-winning choreographer Fiona Quilligan.

Looking forward to our opening tomorrow at Smock Alley Theatre!
I wrote this poem a while ago in response to James McKenna's sculptures:

"Granite man stay standing
Granite stay near
I remember you in a downpour in the woods at Fernhill
head high in the trench you had dug;
a deep foundation to support your tree top colony of women.
Umbrellaed we brought you home to change your cloths, eat and talk the night away. When you did not
have the price of a large block
you worked with smaller off cuts carving each stone
breathing form to limbs, torso, head, hand and foot.
Like fragments strewn among ancient columns you
built your figures limb upon limb stone upon stone
assembling the female anatomy of Miss Geraldine Square
I remember standing in your small kitchen looking at milk cartons piled high
When I asked you what you were keeping them for
you smiled describing your cleverly devised carton mould.
Pressing it close to your own body, you cast in cement
what you called some facets of the female form,
or woman in glass “window woman”
If anyone knew the depth of a foundation needed to support a granite wall
it was you James.
Granite man stay standing
Granite stay near"

Miss Geraldine Square by James Mckenna... a source of inspiration for Window Woman. We are privileged to have Justine Cooper to embody her... I think they share a likeness in mind, body and face.
