Some of the housing estates around the area have religious shrines / grottos that were built and are and maintained by the residents. It is a lovely piece of local history and culture and displays a wonderful sense of community and belonging.

Part 2

Following on from Castle Park my next image is from Greenhills. The grotto is prominently placed in the estate and as can be seen is very well maintained. It is a real credit to the local residents who care for it so tenderly. Well done Greenhills!!!

Some of the housing estates around the area have religious shrines / grottos that were built and are and maintained by the residents. It is a lovely piece of local history and culture and displays a wonderful sense of community and belonging. Over the next few days I will bring you a selection of them.

First up on the list is Castle Park. I am not sure when it was installed or any story behind it. It would be great if some of the locals would add information or details in the comments. A lovely simple design that hopefully will ignite some good memories for people.

The last of the great Chip shops in old Athy that I will feature was on Woodstock Street. It was run by Danny Kane. Your orders were served through a hatch window. The cheeseburger was absolutely fabulous. Danny grew his own potatoes and also other vegetables.

The only one of the four I listed that is still currently run as a takeaway. Nice to see tradition continuing.
