🤩Meet John Curley
This is John Curley, who is a farmer living in Clonown Athlone. John has been living with Shannon flooding all his adult life. The flooding can occur for almost half the year and can seriously effect the livelihoods of family farms along the Shannon basin. John who is a member of Save our Shannon group, a collection of people who are lobbying politicians and Government agencies to try improve their situation. He kindly allowed me to take some photos during a recent portrait session.

🤩Meet Matt & Florence McBride

Matt is a vital member of the Athlone community, sharing his deep passion for the underwater world with others. He is a member of the Athlone Sub Aqua Club, and also an independent instructor. Matt holds prestigious instructor certifications across the world’s leading diving organizations:
* SDI (Scuba Diving International): Providing modern, independent instruction for recreational divers.
* PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors): The world’s largest scuba training organization.
* EFR (Emergency First Response): Teaching essential CPR and first aid skills to divers and the general public alike.

You can find Matt by the ocean most weekends, teaching beginners how to take their first breaths underwater and guiding more experienced divers through advanced courses. Giving people their first taste of the beautiful underwater world is Matt's true passion.

He is pictured here with his 18-month-old daughter, Florence.

🤩Meet Sinéad Byrne Canning

Sinéad is a poet from Athlone and a proud mam of two young girls. She started writing poetry a few years ago as a way to process the big feelings that come with motherhood and life’s changes.

Sinéad is actively involved in organising and hosting events across Athlone and Roscommon, and she is deeply passionate about her community, where she also volunteers regularly.

She is especially proud of her current voluntary role as Festival & Events Coordinator with Athlone Family Resource Centre, where through this work she helps to bring local community and the arts together.

🤩Meet Martin Smith
This is Martin Smith, who was a butcher for many years in Dunnings Butchers in Connaught St Athlone. Dunnings a hugely popular business had traded for almost 55 years since 1971 and closed in April 2025. Martin along with Bernie Dunning his late brother Sean RIP and Paul Cleary were part of the Connaught St fabric for many of those years.

They kindly allowed me to take some photographs on the day before finally closing.

🤩A Culinary Journey Rooted in Athlone by Martin Duffy

In 1997, a journey into the world of professional cookery began in Athlone. Arriving with a passion for food and a determination to build a career in the culinary arts, the first step was enrolling in a certificate programme at the Athlone Institute of Technology on the Northgate Street campus.

Over the course of 5 years, this foundation was carefully built through dedication and hard work. During this time, 3 key qualifications were achieved: Practical Cookery, Supervisory Development, and a Diploma in Hotel Management.

Following this period of education, valuable experience was gained across a variety of locations. However, Athlone ultimately became home again in 2005, offering the opportunity to grow professionally within a familiar and thriving hospitality scene. Work across several well-known establishments—including Glasson Golf Hotel, the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, and the Bay Group—helped refine both technical ability and leadership skills.

This progression led to a significant role at the Athlone Springs Hotel, where a long-term position as Head Chef was secured.

A commitment to personal and professional development remained strong throughout this journey. 4 years ago, a return to education resulted in the successful completion of a degree in Culinary Arts. During this time, there was also active participation in competitions and culinary events, representing the university in both Dublin and Belfast.

From early beginnings as a student to leading a professional kitchen, this journey reflects dedication, growth, and a lasting passion for the culinary arts—firmly rooted in Athlone.

The Athlone Photography Club is delighted to invite you to the launch of our upcoming exhibition, The People of Athlone Ver 2, which is being held as part of the All Ireland Drama Fringe Festival 2026. .ireland.drama.festival

The exhibition will take place in the Athlone Town Centre, and will run from Thursday, 30th April to 11th May 2026. The official launch will be held on Thursday, 30th April at 6:30pm and will be opened by the Mayor of Athlone.

🤩Meet Paddy McCaul.
Paddy grew up in Iona Park and the McCaul family were much loved and respected in the close knit community. (I was a neighbour)
Paddy is the proprietor of the Shamrock Lodge Hotel since 1994.
Long before he took over Paddy’s family had a connection with the hotel as his father was a chef there during Princess Grace’s visit in 1961. Paddy loves his football and had the great honour of being elected President of the Football Association of Ireland in 2010. Paddy along with his son Alan (General Manager) work hard together with their team to ensure that each and every guest enjoy their stay at the family run Shamrock Lodge Hotel.

📸✨ MOMENTS IN FOCUS ✨📸
We are delighted to invite you to our brand-new exhibition, Moments in Focus, taking place from 28th November until early February in the stunning (lLuan Gallery)'s boardwalk. This exhibition brings together the work of 29 photographers from our club, all styles and genres.

Of course, take the opportunity to see the main exhibition "Mythologies of the Personal and the Land" featuring work by 30 Westmeath artists.
