We go to a lot of beaches. We go to the beaches every other weekend. We have been to almost all the beaches on the west coast of Ireland. And all of them are beautiful but they are all missing an important element.

We are very desi people and we need a cup of garam cha and pakoras to enjoy any good views. The chaiwalas, badamwalas, jhalmuri walas bring life to the beaches back home. We need them here. Without them beaches become boring with nothing left to do.

মরুভূমিতে জাহাজ দুর্ঘটনা

প্রতি বছর গরম কাল আর গরমের ছুটি ওকে ওর ছোট বেলার কথা মনে করিয়ে দেয়। এই স্মৃতি ওর ---
ছোট বেলায় মানে, সালটা ১৯৮৬-১৯৯০ হবে, আমরা থাকতাম সৌদি আরবের আল-খুবের শহরে, মনে পরে তখন প্রতি বছর আশেপাশের প্রতিবেশী, চেনা পরিচিতদের মধ্যে গরমের ছুটি শুরু হতেই হিড়িক পরে যেত উমরা করতে মক্কা যাওয়ার।
এই সময় যারা সৌদি আরবে থাকতেন তাদের কারুরই প্রতি বছর ছুটিতে পুরো পরিবার নিয়ে দেশে যাওয়ার মত আর্থিক সামর্থ্য ছিলো না, তাই ছুটিতে যাওয়ার ওই একটাই জায়গা ছিল। খুবের থেকে মক্কা গাড়িতে যেতে সময় লাগত ১২ ঘণ্টা। বেশির ভাগ মানুষই সূর্য ডোবার পরে ড্রাইভ করতেন মরুভূমির গরম এড়াতে, আর তখন গাড়িতে এ সি এত প্রচলিত ছিল না, দিনের বেলায় গাড়ি কেক ওভেনে কেক টিনের মত গরম হয়ে যেত।
তখন সৌদি আরবের মরুভূমির রাস্তা আজ-কালকার রাস্তাঘাটের মত এত ভালো ছিল না। সব রাস্তাই টু-লেন ছিল, সেই সরু রাস্তার উপর প্রচন্ড জোরে ট্রাক গাড়ি সব কিছুই চলত, আর তার ওপর ছিল উটের উপদ্রব।
অনবরত মরুভূতি থেকে উট রাস্তায় উঠে আসত, রাত্রে হেড লাইটের আলোতে ভালো করে দেখাও যেত না প্রায়েই গাড়ির সাথে ধাক্কা লাগত উটের। উটের পায়ে গাড়ি লাগতেই উট এসে পড়ত গাড়ির সামনের কাঁচে ও বোনেটে। সাংঘাতিক অবস্থা হত যাত্রীদের ওই রকম দুর্ঘটনায় বেশির ভাগ সময় গাড়ির সব যাত্রীই প্রাণ হারাতেন। প্রতি বছর এই সময়টা দুঃসংবাদের আতঙ্কে কাটত। মরুভূমির ওপর দিয়ে গাড়ি করে অন্য শহরে যাওয়া ছিল একটা বিভীষিকা।
এখন রাস্তা অনেক চওড়া হয়েছে টু-লেন রাস্তা সিক্স-লেন হয়েছে। রাস্তার দুই ধারে কাঁটা তার দিয়ে ব্যারিকেড করা আছে, রাস্তায় রেফলেক্টর আছে যাতে রাত্রেও সহজে গাড়ি চালানো যায়। কিন্তু তবুও উট সমস্যা কম হলেও পুরোপুরি সমাধান হয়েনি। যখন মরুভূমিতে বালির ঝড় ওঠে তখন ব্যারিকেড বালিয়াড়িতে ঢেকে যায়, আর বালিয়াড়ি টপকে আবার উট রাস্তায়।
