In an effort to create creative interactions between documentary and society.

Forum Film Dokumenter is a non-profit organization which focuses on the documentary film in Indonesia. The purpose of this organization is to develop the documentary film infrastructure through research, workshop, archive, screenings, production, and of course the festival. This organization was established in 2002 with the name Komunitas Dokumenter, but then changed to Forum Film Dokumenter in 2013.

Shinsuke Ogawa was one of the most radical figures in postwar Japanese documentary cinema. Emerging from the political turbulence of the 1960s, Ogawa rejected the notion of the filmmaker as a neutral observer and instead built a collective practice through Ogawa Productions (Ogawa Pro) in 1968.

Ogawa remains an influential figure as he redefined what documentary practice could demand from its makers. His work showed that documentary is about representation, commitment, and shared life. Presenting this month’s Celebrating Cinema on Auteur: Shinsuke Ogawa 🌾🌼

Landscape has occupied a central position in documentary cinema since the medium’s earliest years. Across the history of nonfiction filmmaking, landscapes have functioned as sites where memory, labor, political conflict, ecology, and historical time become visible.

Documentary cinema repeatedly challenges the assumption that landscapes simply provide context for human action. Instead, landscapes often emerge as active participants in the construction of meaning.

Throughout her career, Chantal Akerman moved fluidly between documentary, fiction, installation, and essay film. She rejected strict distinctions between forms, frequently incorporating autobiographical elements, letters, voice-over, and personal reflection into her work. Akerman’s impact can be seen across documentary practice, feminist filmmaking, essay cinema, gallery installations, and contemporary slow cinema. The Hour of the Furnaces (La hora de los hornos); directed by Fernando Solanas and written by Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas, is widely regarded as one of the most influential political documentaries ever made.

Produced during a period of dictatorship, censorship, and political unrest in Argentina, the film became a foundational work of what would later be Third Cinema: a radical movement that rejected both Hollywood commercial cinema and European auteur cinema in favor of film as a tool for anti-colonial struggle, political education, and collective action.
