THE ENGLISH VERSION

It's not people who live forever, but the traces they leave behind.

And sometimes, every ending is simply the beginning of something new. ✨

**Slide 2**
This message can be found in *"Embryo"* (1989), the final painting created by Maestro Affandi.

The word EMBRYO symbolizes the beginning of life—a new chapter waiting to unfold.

What makes this work especially meaningful is that it was painted shortly before Affandi passed away in 1990.

Through this painting, Affandi seems to remind us that while one life may come to an end, new life, new ideas, and new beginnings continue to emerge.

**Slide 3**
Although Affandi is no longer with us, his spirit continues to live on through his art.

His works still inspire artists, art lovers, and new generations to create, explore, and see the world through a different lens.

*"Embryo"* also encourages us to make the most of our time and leave behind something meaningful.

One way to do that is by learning about, appreciating, and preserving Indonesian art and culture.

Every day, we pass through Jalan Affandi…
But not everyone knows the story behind the name. 👀✨

Back then, this street was known as Gejayan Street. On May 20th, 2007, it was officially renamed Jalan Affandi as a tribute to one of Indonesia’s greatest art maestros, Affandi Koesoema.

So yes—the road many people cross every day actually carries a story too.
SWIPE to discover it →

Slide 3 :
On May 20th, 2007, Gejayan Street was officially renamed Jalan Affandi by the Sleman Regency Government. The inauguration was led by Ibnu Subiyanto, the Regent of Sleman at the time, as a tribute to Affandi’s immense contribution to Indonesian art.

Slide 4 :
Interestingly, the process had started a year earlier. On August 10th, 2006, an Affandi monument was built near Ringroad Condongcatur as a landmark honoring his influence on Indonesian fine arts, especially in Yogyakarta.

Jalan Affandi stretches from the North Ringroad area of Condongcatur to Jalan Solo near Demangan Market—an area once widely known as Gejayan Mrican Street.

Slide 5 :
What makes the street even more special is the presence of Affandi-themed murals along the road. These artworks bring his spirit into the city’s daily rhythm, making his legacy feel alive beyond museum walls. 🎨

Slide 6 :
The inauguration was celebrated through the lively “Affandi Carnival Parade” as part of Affandi’s 100th anniversary commemoration. The event featured art performances, exhibitions, bazaars, competitions, and even 100 participants wearing Affandi masks throughout the parade.

Slide 7 :
Today, Affandi’s name lives not only through his paintings, but also through a street passed by thousands of people every day in Yogyakarta.

A simple yet meaningful tribute to a maestro whose legacy continues to inspire generations. ✨

Slide 3 : Gallery I marked the beginning of Affandi’s dream for Museum Affandi. Completed in 1962, this 314.6 m² gallery was built to showcase his paintings and became the heart of his artistic journey. Its iconic banana leaf-shaped roof was inspired by a childhood memory when Affandi recovered from chickenpox covered with banana leaves to stay cool and protected. What began as a personal memory later became the architectural identity of the museum. Gallery I was officially inaugurated in 1973 by Ida Bagus Mantra, then Director General of Culture.

Slide 4 : Inside Gallery I, visitors can explore Affandi’s artistic journey from his early career to the final years of his life. The collection includes sketches, watercolors, pastels, and oil paintings. Personal objects such as his bicycle and modified 1970 Mitsubishi Galant shaped like a shark are also displayed, along with awards from Indonesia and abroad—offering a closer look into the artist behind the paintings.

Slide 5 : In 1987, Gallery II was built with support from Soeharto and inaugurated in 1988 by Fuad Hassan. Originally functioning as both an exhibition and sales space, the gallery also displayed works by prominent Indonesian artists including S. Sudjojono, Hendra Gunawan, Barli Sasmitawinata, and Mochtar Apin. Today, Gallery II focuses more on Affandi’s artistic journey, especially during his travels across India and Europe.

Slide 6 : Gallery III began construction in 1997 and was inaugurated in 2000 by Hamengkubuwono X. Continuing Affandi’s signature curved architecture and banana leaf-inspired design, the gallery consists of three levels: exhibition space, conservation area, and collection storage. Unlike the previous galleries, Gallery III highlights works by Affandi’s family, including embroidery by Maryati and paintings by Kartika and Rukmini. Today, it mainly showcases Kartika Affandi’s works.

Halo Sobat Affandi! 👋🎨

**ENGLISH VERSION**

Not just animal paintings…
In Affandi’s hands, every animal carries a story.
There’s love, empathy, even unrest—captured directly on canvas. 🎨

Slide 3: “Died in My Hands”
This painting was inspired by a real moment after World War II, when Affandi found a small bird that had been shot and died in his hands.
The birds once accompanied him while sitting beneath a banyan tree near his home, but over time their songs disappeared. Through this work, Affandi expresses grief and anger toward the destruction of nature caused by humans.

Slide 4: “Turtle Enclosures”
In this piece, Affandi portrays turtles trapped in cramped spaces without freedom. Inspired by what he witnessed on Serangan Island, Bali, the painting reflects his empathy toward living beings confined by human actions. Through expressive brushstrokes, he reminds us of the fragile relationship between humans and nature.

Slide 5: “Bird Market in Jogja”
Unlike the previous works, this painting captures a lively atmosphere at Pasar Ngasem, Yogyakarta. Interestingly, Affandi completed it in only around 30 minutes—showing how familiar and connected he felt with the place. Bird cages, large trees, and colorful rooftops all come together to portray the vibrant rhythm of the traditional market.

Slide 6: “Crabs”
Through this work, Affandi explored a subject rarely painted. Inspired by his experiences by the sea, he was fascinated by crabs as creatures that live between two worlds. With his expressive style, the painting feels dynamic—almost as if the crabs are moving across the canvas.

Through these works, Affandi reminds us that animals are not merely objects to paint, but living beings connected to human life, emotion, and the environment.
