“According to legend, Princess Mandalika was a famous Indonesian princess who threw herself into the ocean centuries ago to avoid being forced into marriage. While many interpretations diverge on the specifics, the common story centres on her refusal to be married off by her father to a prince. This defiance was evidently met with trouble and anger. The princess, overcome with grief, walked into the breaking waves until the sea swallowed her, eventually transforming into a “Nyale”.

“In Sumba, however, their legend centers around a queen who was happily married to a fisherman. Her husband went out to sea, and after a long time with no return, the queen assumed he had died and thus found a new husband. When her first husband returned alive and angry about the new marriage, the two men fought.

This fight is now re-enacted every year with a performance called the Pasola. The Pasola is essentially a horseback battle that often turns so violent that many participants are left with serious injuries. Milan laughs when she shares this, “That’s just the way it is, people don’t care if they get injured, it’s our tradition.”

A beautiful feature by exploring the coinciding legends of Sumba and Lombok for the BAU NYALE festival. The two stories intertwined by the tale of a sea worm, known as Nyale, believed to be the reincarnation of a woman of power and beauty (A Queen and a Princess) whose spirit returns with the ocean each year.

Pulled from scattered hard drive to be plastered on the front of issue 7, and then into his short but evocative film, is an iconic screen grab (an unconventional choice) of during an unforgettable session in the Ments.

Matta has an artistic way of showcasing the untamed energy of Indonesia and the crazy novelty that comes with every dry season here. His approach to his work and his genuine outlook on life has personally impacted me, and many other people when it comes to how we should view this crazy world of ours.

“‘Steve No Jobs’ came from a joke, but it stuck with me. I don’t want to be doing what I do just for the money, I want to be in love with what I do. To be proud and passionate and excited to create new things. To learn, study and enjoy life at my own speed. I’m so happy that I am able to call this my work. And like I said, it’s not a job if you love doing it.“ - Page 94.

A sneak peak of series spread across pages 102 - 107.

Nic’s work is guided by an intuitive sense of colour and composition, always grounded in real moments and honest storytelling. We found it almost impossible to handpick favourites! So much of his work felt deeply resonant - a pure reflection of Indonesia’s culture and coastline, all captured during his short time here.

Available in print only, in selected stores in Uluwatu 🤍

For issue seven we wanted to explore some of the most unique stays built and designed by expects living in Sri Lanka, and share the behind the scenes of what it’s really like to bring a project like this to life.

was an easy first choice. A tucked-away sanctuary shaped by 70s nostalgia and the playful spirit of old Argentinian motels. Think burnt earthy tones, handcrafted tiles and a layout that invites you to settle in.
More on the story, the concept, and Emilie & Franco soon.

“I came here to Bali and met this guy by chance who really changed everything for me. His name was Jim Banks. Pretty quickly I understood he had his fair share of knowledge about what Indo was hiding. We started talking about how there were still a few uncrowded waves left. He told me, “If you wanted to do it, the way to do it would be to buy a trail bike and ride east.” That got me thinking pretty hard, and so the next year I came back, bought a trail bike, and started riding.”

Tom is the kinda guy creating stories, not content. With three journeys through Indo under his belt, he has explored some of the archipelago’s most fickle and remote landscapes armed with little more than his trail bike, his surfboards and a camera. Lots of exciting things are coming from soon. Read all about it and more in issue 7.
