Yesterday I posted that I couldn't find the words to express the rage I'm feeling at the horrors that the US and Israel are inflicting on the people of our beautiful world. Today I have some images that help a little.

Next week, the people of Bali will hold the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade, aimed at purifying the island from evil spirits, negative energy, and malevolent forces. Giant, handmade monster statues are paraded and then burned to represent the triumph of good over evil. This morning I was lucky enough to catch an early glimpse of some of the statues. Staring into their demonic faces gave me much the same feeling as I currently have when watching the news.

Bali's doing its best to rid itself of malevolent forces. Can the rest of the world please, please find a way to do the same?

Many moons ago, when I was a student of English literature in Australia, I didn't even dare to dream that one day I'd get to moderate conversations with some of the world's most celebrated writers. But life is filled with extraordinary surprises.

Next Friday night, at the beautiful in Ubud, Bali, I'll be in conversation with the luminous Geraldine Brooks, who, as I'm sure many of you know, is a Pullitzer Prize winning novelist and highly acclaimed journalist. Geraldine and I will be talking about many aspects of her amazing life, and centring our conversation on her most recent book, Memorial Days, which describes a sudden, devastating loss, and a journey towards peace.

Booking is essential for what's bound to be a beautiful evening. Please see and for details. πŸ’•

What a joy it was to moderate a conversation with the incredible Brigid Delaney at Indus Supper Club on Sunday. Brigid and I talked about The Seeker and the Sage, her second book on the philosophy of Stoicism (so deeply needed in these dark times!), and we all enjoyed the stunning food, views and atmosphere created by . Please read The Seeker and the Sage, and also Brigid's first book on Stoicism, Reasons Not to Worry. Both have helped me to begin to navigate some of the traumas of our times... I strongly recommend them as an antidote for us all. πŸ“šβœ¨οΈπŸ’•

Oof, this 2016 trend is hitting me hard...

We were living in Islamabad, and I was reading about Tehran. My boys were babies, and I was happy and sick and skinny and delighted and overwhelmed. And the world was taking the darkest of dark turns...

I just found what I posted on Facebook on November 10th of that year... Here it is in full. I'm so glad I couldn't have known how much worse it was going get... If anyone out there can help us, please do.

"Today begins our challenge of bringing up our sons to never aspire to be anything at all like the man who holds the world's highest office. Let's think, "What would Trump do?" then do exactly the opposite. You see Donald Trump despising and denigrating people with backgrounds different to his own? Right, let's be open-hearted and inclusive. See that man who thinks women are objects of amusement? Let's show him that all of us, men and women, are in this together, and deserve one another's respect and kindness. You think, my sons, that the President of the USA would seek to diminish the rights of people whose sexuality differs from his own amoral and indiscriminate straight promiscuity? Unfortunately, my little men, you are right, so let's, instead, live and let live and know that love is love. Let's choose calm, patience and intelligence in the face of stupidity and violence, beauty in the face of bluster, truth in the face of lies. We can do this, my gorgeous ones, and all the good people in the world will be doing it arm in arm with us. We'll all burn brightly in this strange new darkness."

It's been a long time since I posted on my Substack! This post will give you some idea as to why. My pen might not have had a workout for a while, but boy, is my padel serve something to behold 🀣.

I'm so grateful to the friends who've shown me that life can always bring unexpected joys and completely unanticipated talents 🀣πŸ’ͺ🎾. I'm also happy to be back at my keyboard again. πŸ˜ŠπŸ’•

Major vulnerability alert...

Yesterday I travelled to Ubud to play in a padel tournament with seven beautiful friends. We had such a great time! When I got home I felt happy and relaxed and pleasantly tired. And then the photos came in...

When I looked at the photos of my friends, I couldn't stop smiling. They all looked amazing - strong, vibrant, and youthful. But when I looked at the photos of myself, all I could see was jowls and sagging eyelids and a double chin... It was a genuine shock. In my head, I'm youthful and strong. Seeing these pictures of me looking very much my age really shook me up.

But here's the thing... Ageing is a privilege. I know that and I've written about it on here before. My mum died at 41, and didn't have the chance to gain wrinkles and grey hair and gnarled old hands. I want those things! I want to grow to an old, old age, and looking older comes with the territory!

When I have conversations with younger women, they often use the phrase "never say never" when it comes to botox and plastic surgery. Each to their own. But when it comes to my own face and body, I WANT to say never. And I want to mean it. I want to be able to see my own sagging face and body and love them for all their lines and scars and imperfections. I want to concentrate on what my body has done and what it continues to be able to do, not hate it for being subject to the natural process of ageing that all of our bodies, with luck, are subject to.

So that's why I'm posting this photo here. I'm genuinely not seeking platitudes ("Oh but you look good for your age!"). What I want to do is admit that seeing myself as older in a society obsessed with youth is uncomfortable, and share the photos anyway.

Rather than spending money and time propping up a beauty industry that I despise and playing into misogynistic stereotypes, I'm going to work on self-love and self-acceptance. I'm going to keep living, keep being grateful for my healthy, ageing body, keep working on my mind and my heart and my ever-grateful soul.

And I'm sending love to all of you, and hoping that you too are treating your own beautiful bodies with love and kindness. πŸ’•

On Friday night, the Sanur Symposium met at the always stunning to discuss the incredible What Strange Paradise by , one of whose sessions I was honoured to photograpgh at this year's

The ironies of our situation were not lost on us, as we sat in beautiful surroundings and ate a gorgeous meal while we discussed a book in which people just like us but for various accidents of birth and circumstance are forced to fight for their very survival. We talked about how we can use our good fortune to assist and to raise awareness, and to raise children for whom the unthinkable will become the impossible.

How can we all do better?

I also strongly recommend that everyone also reads Omar's extraordinary new book, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, for which he was recently awarded the National Book Award for non-fiction.

Omar's is one of the most important voices of our time. PLEASE read his books without delay. πŸ“šπŸ’•

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

I was just going through an old journal, and I found my response to this beautiful question from Mary Oliver, which was used as a writing prompt in a workshop I attended years ago. Here are some of the thoughts I scribbled down.

How would you answer this question? I'd so love to hear your thoughts. πŸ’•

Dog appreciation post incoming!

I've never seen myself as a dog lover., but the boys have wanted dogs for years, and when some friends said they were moving back to the UK and they needed to find a home for their fur babies, I knew that ours was the right home to accommodate them. We've had Ruby and Taffy for five days now, and they're transforming my life and my thinking. I'm so grateful. πŸΎπŸ’•
