Dua For Resisting Temptation: Stop Bad Thoughts

It’s reported in Sunan Abi Dawud that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught Shakl ibn Humayd a dua for resisting temptation.

Temptation is a matter which believing Muslims shouldn’t take lightly. When our bad thoughts and actions get out of hand, our spiritual wellbeing is at stake.

What we need to do is examine how we’re using our organs collectively – our ears, our eyes, our mouths, our minds and our private parts.

Are we using them to serve our purpose – to worship Allah? Or are we misusing them and earning the displeasure of Allah?

You can seek refuge in Allah from evil by learning the dua for resisting temptation.

Seek refuge in Allah from evil

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri sam’i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I hear, from the evil of what I see, from the evil of what I speak, from the evil of what I think, and from the evil of my semen.

Narrated Shakl ibn Humayd:
I said: Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication.
He said: Say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I hear, from the evil of what I see, from the evil of what I speak, from the evil of what I think, and from the evil of my semen” (i.e. sexual passion).
(Sunan Abi Dawud Sunan Abi Dawud 1551. Eng ref. Book 8, Hadith 1546)

Use Your Body For Its Proper Purpose

How to control sexual desires
Seeking the pleasure of Allah should be our top priority. For guidance in this matter, we can turn to the Holy Qur’an.

The following ayah in Surah Al-Mu’minun explains how the believing Muslim should make proper use of their organs – for seeking the pleasure of Allah:

Certainly will the believers have succeeded:
They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
And they who turn away from ill speech
And they who are observant of zakah
And they who guard their private parts
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed –
But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors –
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
And they who carefully maintain their prayers –
Those are the inheritors
Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.

Qur’an Al Mu'minun (23):1-11

We are now in the last 10 days of Ramadan... Make a lot of du'as, increase our ibadah, purify our niyah, do more sadaqah,. Let's make the most of it since we don't know whether we will meet the next Ramadan or no :(

Aisha reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is the Night of Decree, what should I say during it?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Say: O Allah, You are pardoning. You love to forgive, so forgive me

Hadith on Ramadan: Laylat al-Qadar better than a thousand months

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said when the month of Ramadan began, “Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived.”
