We have covered in one of our posts before the Torajan names for each of the colorful beads, but there are actually more of them, one of which is the “pink” colored beads called “kalaa’.” ⁣

Though we have never seen them in real life, the kalaa’ bead is well-documented in at least two dictionaries: “Kamus Toradja-Indonesia” by J. Tammu and Dr. H. Van der Veen (1972) and “The Complete Costume Dictionary” by Elizabeth J. Lewandowski (2011). The bead is described quite differently in each of them; while in the former the name refers to red-white beads like the fruit kalaa' (Syzygium malaccense or Malay apple/mountain apple), in the latter it refers to pink beads. (As a matter of consideration, unmixed patches of red and white will tend to look pink from afar.) ⁣

So which dictionary describes them more accurately? ⁣

One way to answer that is to see what the fruit kalaa’ actually looks like. While there are plenty of examples in Google, the better approach is to look at local pictures. We sifted through Torajan netizens’ posts and found that the kalaa’ fruits are actually varied in color. Some of them are red-white and others have pink-white skins. Considering that, we can’t still conclude the kalaa’ beads’ real color; it could be one of the colors, or it may as well refer to both colors, i.e. red-white and pink or pink-white. ⁣

Exploring the western part of Tana Toraja, encountering one or two people sun-drying rice grains in front of their still-inhabited boat-shaped-roof houses, sauntering about a small village in Saluputti as the aeolian sound of breeze discernibly blew past the ears. A sense of tranquility fell on this area as we walked up from the main road, so calm and quiet that one might as well perceived locals, perhaps out of curiousity, peeked through their head-sized windows. ⁣

The first to notice during the excursion was the structures of some Torajan houses and rice barns that were typical of western Toraja (incl. Mamasa) type. Some of those rarely found at the eastern part of the Toraja region were, among others, black-painted rice barns and houses--called banua bolong in Mamasa (see slide 1), the triangular top board of the façades that were carved with plants (the sun is carved below the plants) instead of the sun or c***s standing atop the suns (slide 4), and drums hung in front of the rice barn (slide 12--this we found in Rembon). As the so called "western Toraja cultural sphere" actually covers a large portion of the Tana Toraja region, wouldn't it be more appropriate to build at least one or two of this type of structure at the urban center in Makale for the sake of representation? ⁣

The Pa' Kalibambang (The Butterfly) motif (see slide 1) is an old motif that had since long ago appeared on local woven fabrics, but it's arguably--at least within the past few decades--the first time made on this type of fabric, that is the fabric that's specifically made for women's co-ord set.⁣ The same goes for Pa' Lolo' Tabang (The Shoot of a Cordyline) (see slide 6), the motif is usually carved on Torajan tongkonans or alangs, but is the first time woven on a fabric.

A Torajan rice barn (alang) stands emblematic for the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Köln, Germany (see slide 1 & 2). Impressed by the structure, the museum bought the alang in 1984 just when the roof was about to be replaced due to old age. The alang was erected in Kesu' region, Tana Toraja (now Toraja Utara) in mid 1930s (see slide 3), richly decorated by a carver named Ne' Kambane.⁣

The granary was moved from its place of origin through laborious effort. It first had to be carefully dismantled, restored, and later reconstructed on-site in Köln. As it was bought with a dilapidated roof, a new one was needed to complete the structure. To do that, the museum shipped bamboo shingles from Toraja and accordingly, in 2008, hired Torajan craftsmen for the complex job of assembly. ⁣ ⁣

A rare specimen of an embellished Toraja women's bayu tori'--a pullover shirt with a round neck cut out. The shirt is appliqued (handsewn) with colorful geometric shapes and zoomorphic felt forms.

While the specific creation place is yet to be determined, the neck style suggests a Sa'dan Toraja provenance. The existence of the twin lizards at the middle though are rather counterintuitive, considering its general absence in Sa'dan Torajan house-carvings. However, we recently spotted a lizard symbol carved on the door of a modern Torajan mausoleum (patane), begging a further research to its historical background. The symbol, which appears so commonly on Batak buildings, perhaps was also existent in Torajan ancient cultural history.⁣

The Tongkonan Puang Ponglabba of Sa'dan To' Barana' is already famous with its weaving activities, but perhaps not many of you know that tucked away just behind the settlement is a rippling river flowing across the expanse. The riverbank extends in perfect width for camping activities, lined with some gazebos established for this very purpose. If you are into rafting, of the scale with more fun and less thrill and challenges, that level of water sport is also available in the area. How convenient, the renowned Torajan structures, a weaving center, camping site, and pristine river, all are packed in one complex, definitely a great option for a short getaway.⁣

Note: Visitors will be charged entry fee. The attractions are part of an ecosystem managed by members of the Tongkonan. ⁣
