On Thursday 31 October there will be a special edition of Pujangga Laras, which will also serve as the final Pujangga Laras of Year 18. Year 19 of Pujangga Laras will begin in January 2025, and we are ready to receive Year 19 subscriptions—more information on that around early December.

THE EVENT:
As Pujangga Laras's way of celebrating "Hari Wayang Dunia," which is observed in Solo from November 1st through November 7th, we will host a playing session of classical Solonese wayang accompaniment selections for major court audience scenes—most of which are hardly ever, to never, heard anymore.
When I first arrived in Java, these were all standard (except maybe Gandrung Mangu) and it was other, even more obscure pieces which were considered to be dying out. Now most of these pieces are rarely heard in wayang.
The focus will be on:
—how the gendhing is garap-ed for wayang
—how the dhalang uses kombangan to enhance the melody
—how the dhodhogan works for sirep, udhar, and suwuk
—the drumming for the entrances of any special ("disabet") wayang characters
—sulukan before and (mostly) after the gendhing
In order to illustrate the scenes in question we will set up a wayang screen in the performance area and we have invited dhalang from the loyal Pujangga Laras community to illustrate scenes.
There will be no narration or speech of any sort—the focus will always be on the karawitan aspect, since this is Pujangga Laras. So often in performances, we cannot really HEAR how these pieces work because the sound system operators build up the voice of the dhalang to the point of overwhelming everything else.
This is not a wayang performance and not even complete wayang scenes, just a study of accompaniment pieces with illustrative aspects.
I must say, the community is SO excited—we've never received such enthusiastic messages from the general community about a Pujangga Laras event.
