some songs refuse to disappear.

‘genjer genjer’, written by muhammad arief, has travelled through generations and countless recordings, from bing slamet and lilis suryani to jack lesmana’s orkes irama, and later interpretations by omprock, dengue fever, nova ruth & filastine, and tomi simatupang incarnation.

different voices, different arrangements, different eras.

the song keeps finding its way back.

some songs are beautiful because they keep things simple.

‘senandung pagi’ by donas is one of them.

originally released around 1979, the song carries a quiet, almost effortless feeling of a new morning. simple words, a simple sentiment, but somehow it stays with you.

behind the name donas is rimawan ardono as, a musician and songwriter from yogyakarta whose career began in the late 1970s.

the recording also brings together two fascinating names from that period. donas, and nomo koeswoyo, one of the founding members and drummer of koes bersaudara, who wrote the music for “senandung pagi”.

donas would go on to write songs for artists including franky sahilatua, chicha koeswoyo, sary yok koeswoyo and iga mawarni, while also working across music, theatre and visual production.

today, he lives a quiet life in yogyakarta. and decades later, “senandung pagi” has resurfaced under the name erdonas.

more than four decades later, we thought this little song deserved to be heard again.

there’s a story behind ‘saman doye’.

written by david rumagesan, the song comes from kokas, fakfak, west papua, and was brought to a wider audience through the black brothers recording.

michael jakarimilena joins us to talk about the song, its roots, and the story behind it.

and yes, “saman doye” later found its way onto “those shocking shaking days”, the now again records compilation that introduced a whole new audience to the wild side of 1970s indonesian rock.

some songs start with a melody.

some start with a story.

‘jari dan jempol’ apparently started with deddy stanzah daydreaming.

in an interview with aktuil, deddy said he wrote the lyrics in less than ten minutes. the music came later at nova studio, just before recording.

written by harry minggoes, released by deddy stanzah in 1977.
