ROH also presents its artists in an international scale and has shown with the most prestigious art fairs in Asia.

ROH Projects was founded in 2012 with a vision to establish a leading gallery for the development of contemporary art in Indonesia and the greater Asia Pacific Region. It focuses on providing a platform for emerging artists with alternative practices as well as showing more developed artists in a nuanced and intellectually sound manner. On the 28th of August, 2015, ROH has just opened a new space

in the center of the city in the Central Business District of Jakarta and hopes to entrench itself further in the development of contemporary art infrastructure here.

ROH is pleased to share Kei Imazu's first large-scale, institutional solo exhibition, 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘩 𝘈𝘪𝘳, at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.

In 2017, Imazu moved to Bandung, Indonesia to live and work. In recent years, her works have shifted to represent her research into contemporary issues of urban development and environmental pollution in Indonesia, all of which capture the reality of the artist’s immediate surroundings. These issues are never directly expressed in Imazu’s works, but are rather woven and linked between a diverse range of archival images, juxtaposing multiple temporalities pertaining to Indonesian history, mythology, and ecosystems related to biological evolution and extinction, thereby extending her work in a more expansive direction. Imazu’s paintings, in which elements of global environmental issues, eco-feminism, mythology, history, and politics are juxtaposed on the same plane, are dynamic forms of artistic expression created by the vast amount of images and information passing through her body.

𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘩 𝘈𝘪𝘳 means “homeland”, made of up of the Indonesian words 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘩 (earth) and 𝘢𝘪𝘳 (water). Imazu’s works―based on her thoughts and experiences while living in both Indonesia, where she currently lives, and Japan, where she has her roots―invite audiences into a contemplative return to one’s sense of place and belonging.

ROH is pleased to share installation views of 𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘠𝘖𝘕𝘌 𝘓𝘖𝘝𝘌 𝘗𝘙𝘌𝘚𝘚𝘜𝘙𝘌, a solo presentation by Eko Nugroho for Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, featuring works spanning the years 2009 to 2024. The presentation offers a window into the practice of one of Indonesia’s most dynamic contemporary artists, whose works intertwine cultural tradition with urgent political and social critique.

Eko Nugroho (b. 1977, Yogyakarta, Indonesia) emerged as an artist during the 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘪 𝘌𝘳𝘢, marking a period of significant political upheaval and Indonesia’s transition to democracy following the fall of President Suharto’s 32-year regime. His art, rooted in this turbulence, reflects this collision of freedom and fragility. Central to this is his 𝘋𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘩 (DGTMB) project: an underground zine launched in 2000 that gave voice to the raw energy of a society in transition. Through its bold imagery and biting humor, the zine became a platform for unfiltered social commentary amidst the backdrop of Indonesia’s post-authoritarian recovery.

Earlier works within the presentation highlight the relevance of Nugroho’s sharp political gaze which in time has only grown in potency. His batik comic series from 2013 grapples with themes from the rise of populist politics to the fragility of democratic systems, taking on new life as metaphors for today’s fractured political landscape. Embroidered works, one of which the presentation takes its title, combine wit with critique to confront societal contradictions with disarming clarity. These latter works, created in collaboration with local artisans, are further examples of community engagement and the preservation of Indonesia’s cultural heritage as a crucial core of Nugroho’s work.

𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘠𝘖𝘕𝘌 𝘓𝘖𝘝𝘌 𝘗𝘙𝘌𝘚𝘚𝘜𝘙𝘌 draws attention to Nugroho’s capacity to hold the past and present in dialogue. These works refuse neutrality, pressing and confronting the systems we navigate and the narratives that we inherit.

ROH is pleased to share installation photographs of Bagus Pandega's ongoing presentation 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢 at Esplanade Concourse, Singapore. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢 draws upon Bagus Pandega’s experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic where there was severe shortage of medical oxygen. In response, he researched into do-it-yourself methods to build his own oxygen concentrator machine.

The artist’s machine-building experience is translated into a work that contemplates the fear and desperation caused by the scarcity of a vital resource. Stomata are pores found in plant organs like leaves and stems that facilitate photosynthesis, a life-giving process that is conceptually echoed in the installation at the Concourse. Harnessing the medium of technology, the work is powered by oxygen, generated by a system that purifies air from the environment and biofeedback produced by sansevieria plants nestled within. A lightbox featuring X-ray scans of lungs alludes to the pervasive impact of the virus and collective anxiety over respiratory health.

ROH is pleased to share installation photographs of Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi's works in the ongoing group exhibition 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 at Jendela (Visual Arts Space), Singapore. The exhibition explores ideas of tension, balance, and the paradoxes that exist in our relationship with the world around us.

The artists engage with living organisms, found materials and the workings of natural phenomena in their artistic processes. By sharing agency with nature, the narratives and histories embedded within these materials are given the space to surface, unveiling the latent potential in them to uncover facets of other living realms that are often overlooked. Marks and traces of these engagements manifest in installations, paintings, moving images and photography. The works speak beyond the places they came from, and reflect on how humans can relate and respond to nature in a manner fostered on understanding, collaboration and co-dependence.

ROH is pleased to share Julian Abraham “Togar”‘s Listener Gatherer Session at Cc Foundation, happening tonight at 7 - 9 pm (GMT+8).

The session activates Togar’s installation, 𝘈𝘯 𝘖𝘒_𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘵, currently on show till 26 January 2025.

Begun during the global pandemic, 𝘖𝘒 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰 was initiated as an ongoing/research project for the purpose of creating a space to co-exercise, co-experiment, co-instigate, co-investigate, co-practice, co-produce, co-distribute various ways and forms of listening in an active position to navigate different sounds as well as where they come from, as well as in relation to everyday life.

ROH is pleased to share Tromarama’s participation in the 16th World Film Festival of Bangkok with 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴 (2023).

In 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴, Tromarama challenges the conception of monuments and their ownership, iconography, and value in contemporary society. The collective selected objects, video clips, and images from their archives to compose a filmic movement overlaid by animated objects from their childhood homes. The symbols and motifs reflect the beauty and turbulence of life, evoking the intimacy of home and the intricacy of memory. Although personal archives are fragile, they serve as foundational support for growth and forming one’s worldview. The moving collage is layered with cleaning gestures inspired by the Balinese tradition of Melukat, a ritual that purifies the body, mind, and soul.

Hyun Nahm’s (b. 1990, Goyang, South Korea) practice, grounded in sculptural transformations through chemical reactions, blurs the lines between the industrial and the organic. By combining contemporary materials like epoxy, jesmonite, and polystyrene with traditional techniques, Nahm’s works suggest terrains both familiar and estranged. These landscapes evoke the contingency of urban life through shifting states: melted synthetic foam coagulates into hardened masses, chemical resin stretches with a life of its own, boiling and cracking into forms reminiscent of cooled magma. Rather than a facsimile of nature, Nahm offers echoes of its processes—a dialogue with the forces that continually reshape the earth’s surface.
