"Summer on the French Riviera by the Blue Train” by Charles Jean Hallo (1882–1969) perfectly captures the glamour of the Côte d’Azur in the golden age of luxury rail travel. A sleek blue express train speeds across a majestic stone viaduct high above a vibrant beach scene, golden sand dotted with colorful umbrellas, swimmers, sailboats on the sparkling Mediterranean, and dramatic mountains in the distance. Commissioned by the legendary Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (the WL logo in the corner), it promoted their famous Train Bleu, the luxurious overnight service from Paris to the French Riviera.
In the 1920s, the Blue Train symbolized elegance and escape for the wealthy and fashionable — a journey filled with romance, sunshine, and the promise of endless summer. This poster beautifully sells not just a train ride, but the entire dream of the French Riviera lifestyle.
