Это была поездка вслепую на север острова на Ниепи. День когда все духи острова выходят наружу и надо сидеть дома. Мы выехали из дома, заранее забронировав номер на самом севере. Выскакивали из начинающихся пробок.
Отельчик оказался, небольшим и безлюдным, слегка разрушенным в некоторых местах, но с бассейном и выходом к берегу. Постройки у берега были разрушенны и зпвалены всякими палками и камнями. Атмосферу добавляла погода с дождем и шьормоаыми волнами.
В камере была просроченная плёнка, что тоже позволило поймать настроение этого дня духов. Кадр был сделан с одной точки, двойная экспозиция в обе стороны, волны и Лиля на фоне разбитых океаном строений.

I met .bhai during a Vipassana retreat, on the very first day of meditation. He was a server on the course, which meant he meditated facing the hall. What immediately stood out were the mantra tattoos across his face.

As usual, in the first days of Vipassana it’s tough to sit still — ten hours a day with only short breaks. I kept shifting positions, sometimes sitting with my eyes open, just watching the hall to give my brain at least some kind of input. And every time, my eyes landed on his face. Eyes closed, expression serious, almost stern. He sat perfectly straight, calm, completely still — exactly as you’re supposed to. Watching him pushed me to close my eyes again and get back to my own practice. He was a living reminder not to slack off. That’s really the point of servers — to lead by example. And he practiced with full dedication, at least that’s how it looked from where I sat.

Around the fourth day of Vipassana, I decided I wanted to make his portrait. On the tenth day, when the course ended and silence was finally lifted, I went up to introduce myself. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if he’d even let me take his photo — he looked so strict and detached during meditation. But in reality, he turned out to be warm, kind, and funny, and of course he agreed right away. I didn’t overwhelm him with the whole “sub-personalities” idea; I just said the portrait was about three different states of being.

After chatting a bit, I found out he’s a tattoo artist living in Nepal, and he serves in Buddhist temples. Now I follow him online and every so often I see his photos from the temples.
