Dari Mata Turun Ke Hati

Body language is revealed through what is visible to our eyes: facial expressions, movements, gestures, or body postures. Through sight, we recognize body language; however, to capture the messages and impressions behind it, we need more than just a passing glance—we need keen and sensitive observation. In this process, our knowledge of body language intertwines with our sensitivity and imagination to recognize and feel the nuances of a person's temperament or emotions. We observe closely, then we feel deeply; Dari Mata Turun Ke Hati

The expression akal-akalan (from the root, ‘akal’ meaning ‘mind’, ‘intellect’ or ‘sense’ in Bahasa Indonesia) has a rich range of meanings including cunning, trickery and resourcefulness in Indonesian culture. The term has also come to be associated with the creative material and practical solutions to ‘work around’ and manipulate complicated everyday situations and challenges. In this exhibition, we present akal-akalan as the cultural ingenuity of reprogramming to execute one’s own programme; tricking and tactically recrafting technologies, things and situations to serve one’s own ends. The exhibition locates itself in this milieu of making bringing together artists from the Southeast Asia to speculate on the radical potential of cultural practices like akal-akalan to unsettle and point to alternative ways of imagining our relationship to the ‘technological’.

Alessio Ceruti’s works at ArtSociates interrogate perception, ecology, and the shifting relationship between humans and the natural world, inviting us to move through what is seen and what remains withheld. In that same breath, Buddy Malbasias and Yori Papilaya tried to communicate those simultaneous dualities through movement, hoping to express the tension, or perhaps to question whether the tension should be resolved at all, and instead allowed to remain part of its beauty.

On Friday, 15 May 2026, Buddy and Yori responded to Ceruti’s work through the performance art piece, The Crackles of Silence, as a bodily extension of what Ceruti was trying to communicate through his work: silence, slowness, and introspection.

“The Crackles of Silence”
A performance art by Buddy Malbasias and Yori Papilaya, responding to Alessio Ceruti’s work.

Buddy Malbasias and Yori Papilaya perform the experience of slowness and introspection through their interpretation of Alessio’s work duality. Questioning if contrasting values can move in tandem, through movements. Like Alessio’s body of work, this performance can be interpreted freely, felt deeply, no rush.

Buddy Malbasias is a Filipino-Australian (Bukidnon-born) independent artist-researcher, director, choreographer and performer, working at the intersection of contemporary performance, w_acking and interdisciplinary experimentation. Rooted in the Filipino diaspora, Buddy’s practice traverses cultural hybridity, q***r identity and imaginative world-building, serving as conduits for interrogating and reimagining the ‘immigrant Filipino’ body.

Yori Papilaya is a q***r Indonesian writer and performance artist based in Bandung whose practice centers on vulnerability, repetition, and the emotional traces left by the body. Blending performance, language, and ritual, Yori’s works explore questions of visibility, survival, and emotional labor; especially within q***r and care-driven spaces.

Alessio Ceruti (born 1980 in Varese, Italy) combines image-making with material exploration. Working from underwater photographic and video references, he reprocesses images through layered interventions that blur the line between documentation and imagination. A diver and avid ocean enthusiast, Ceruti draws on his long engagement with the depths to produce a body of work that drifts across the scientific and the poetic: familiar, yet quietly strange. His oceanic creatures hover at the threshold of knowledge, slipping toward abstraction, shaped as much by perception as by the mystery from which they arise. Fragments from Below presents his recent video, installation and two dimensional works that interrogate perception, ecology, and the shifting relation between humans and the natural world, inviting us to move through what is seen, and what remains withheld.

Discover the profound resonance of Gabriel Aries’s Koinonia at Garden 2026

This arrangement of raw and meticulously sculpted marble is united not by uniformity, but by a quiet willingness to bear each other's weight. The serpentinite ring encircling the stones serves as more than mere ornament—it is the silent anchor preserving the integrity of this connection. In this piece, the juxtaposition of rough and polished textures is never a contradiction; rather, it is the essential condition for true balance.

Experience this harmony of form and tension in person:
