New DD salt? Why? What for? what was the new difference that could make me want to risk trying it? So far I’m glad i did a switch to the dosing formula. With its predecessor Pro formula being an excellent salt with all its elements and its major elements being optimally mix reef compatible. It was hard to justify the new dosing formula. After trying the salt out, it was wonderful the new DD dosing salt was annouced providing an alternative option. An adjustment with the main major element “KH” with the new dosing formula similar to the Pro 435cal & 1320mg VS 440cal & 1340mg but KH is a lot lower at 7.8-8.2 with the Dosing Formula, VS 9.3-10.3 for the Pro. This was a major difference for SPS dominated mix reef owners like myself, KH being a very important element, due to its vulnerability to be able to built your reef or destroy it overnight. The new dosing formula provides the option to be able to suit majority of sps dominated reef tanks of kh range 7-8, where sps grows moderately but retains a much better coloration instead of fighting to catch up with skeletal growth with a higher KH, resulting in poorer coloration. Since I’m on the growth & coloration of sps topic, simply explained, having a higher nutrient reef tank would result in having a preferably higher KH maintained reef tank to maintain the growth of the corals. While a low nutrient reef would prefer a lower KH, to not cause any burn tips on the SPS in relation to accelerated growth as the polyps are unable to match the rate the calcium skeletal is growing. Thus algae takes up the free housing before the polyps will. Reefers whom are running high nutrients are recommended to go for the Pro formula while lower nutrient users to try the new dosing formula. Using a salt mix that matches your tank KH maintenance value in your tank avoids fluctuations during water-changes is important, any KH fluctuations is devastating for any coral reef tank. All the above are my opinions to KH and nutrient value correlations where I’ve tested on my sps mix reef. Both the pro & dosing formula are great salts & shall be chosen depending on your reef tank maintenance KH requirement for stability & proper growth.
