An unknown freediver ascends quietly towards a large school of Big Eye Trevallies over the wreck of the USAT Liberty in eastern Bali, Indonesia. Unfortunately since this shot was taken the school has disappeared. As has the group of humphead parrotfish that used to shelter amongst the collapsed metal of the wreck to sleep at night.

A relaxed Mola Mola and a curious human at Mimpang near Candidasa, Bali, Indonesia. Cold waters and strong currents are fine for Molas but somewhat test our human limits. This particular Mola was quite shallow but often we had to push quite far out off the pinnacles in to the darker deeper and colder waters to catch a glimpse of them. Pushing 60m and coming across a Mola being cleaned off a ledge at 70m is a sight I won't soon forget. Time at these depths equals deco requirements and long stops in cold water equals uncomfortable. Dry suit absolutely recommended. 34c air temp, 24 degree surface temps and 18c at depth.

Colourful soft corals and sponges draped all over the western edge of Richelieu Rock, arguably the best divesite in Thailand. Clouds of silvery glass fish hide amongst the rocks to shelter from predators like Trevallies and Emperor fish.

Sad to see more fish traps being used on the coast of Bali. Obviously times are tough, but this method of fishing seems to be pretty ineffective, as over the course of several days we came across these empty cages multiple times, and this little butterfly fish was the only casualty.

There’s a reason they’re called a giant barrel sponges. Xestospongia testudinaria like this are found all over the western Pacific and Indonesia. The closely related and visually indistinguishable Caribbean giant barrel sponge (Xestospongia muta) is known to live for more than 2000 years earning them a place on the list of the longest lived animals.

A Tubastrea coral and feather stars at home on a deep rocky outcropping off an island south of east Bali, and a chilly rebreather diver swimming by. This coral was completely white to the eye but under the light of my strobes it lit up this lovely pink/orange colour.

Guess the profile... Gili Mimpang, just of the southern coast of eastern Bali are a series of pinnacles that every year are visited by these large creatures. So, any ideas what we’re looking at here?
