𝗦𝗢𝗙𝗧 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 🛡️

New hybrid objects by Dorottya Vékony are currently on view in RE MIX at the Museum of Coins and Medals in Kremnica.

Built from found natural materials and familiar forms, these works explore a different idea of protection. Vékony softens the language of traditional weapons by bringing it into contact with objects associated with domestic life, intimacy and care.

What happens when self defense is no longer about becoming harder?

The works point toward strategies of protection that move beyond the conventional logic of force, transforming gestures and tools of care into something capable of resistance.

As the winner of the TÓTalJOY Prize, Vékony will present a solo exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, opening December 2. Established in 2021 by conceptual artist Endre Tót and the Central European Research Institute for Art History (KEMKI), the prize supports an artist with the opportunity to realize a new exhibition project.

START THE WEEK SOMEWHERE BETWEEN REALITY AND A DREAM 🧚‍♀️

Drawing as a map of what is, and what could be.

In Timo Herbst’s work, bodies, political histories, economic systems and references to artists including Joseph Beuys, Francis Alÿs and Chris Marker overlap in a dense network of associations. The drawing becomes a living diagram, tracing how movement, art and politics continually shape one another.

Alongside it, Róza El-Hassan’s new Dream Landscape turns toward another territory, where landscape becomes imagined, remembered and transformed. A space that exists somewhere between the world we inhabit and one we might still create.

Two very different approaches to drawing, both opening up new ways of seeing.

On view as part of ON PAPER, our summer group exhibition bringing together works on paper by 25 artists at Longtermhandstand.

On view until October 3.

Opening hours
Wednesday to Friday
17:00–20:00

𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗦? 𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗡𝗘.

Somewhere between New York and Budapest, Hydeon has been building another world.

In Edge of the Earth, an incredibly detailed graphite drawing measuring just 25 × 20cm, that world fits onto a single sheet of paper. Hydeon’s practice moves through imagined landscapes, outsiders, mythology and strange architectures, turning the obsessive act of drawing into a place of its own.

The work is part of TABLE FOR ONE, our current cabinet exhibition pairing new drawings by Hydeon with works by his longtime friend Áron Lőrincz at Longtermhandstand, Budapest.

Two artists. Two cities. Years of conversation. A lot of time spent alone with a pencil.

We are open today, 17:00–20:00.

Come take a closer look.

𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗣𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 👯🏽‍♀️

Every big painting has to start somewhere.

Currently on view in ON PAPER at Longtermhandstand, Mónika Kárándi’s intimate watercolor Won’t you come down to my arms? offers a glimpse into the beginning of a masterpiece.

Made in 2022, the watercolor became the starting point for Running in the shadows (2023), one of the key paintings in Kárándi’s Los solo exhibition, Remember where we started out Anat Ebgi , Los Angeles in 2023.

This is exactly what we love about ON PAPER: seeing ideas at their most direct, and sometimes discovering where much larger works began.

We are open today, so escape the heat and spend some time with TABLE FOR ONE, our intimate cabinet exhibition bringing together drawings by Áron Lőrincz and Hydeon.

Two artists, Budapest and New York, and countless hours spent drawing alone. Table for One celebrates the solitary rhythms of artistic life and the strange, beautiful worlds that can emerge from them.

Today: WE ARE OPEN
Thursday, August 20: we’ll rest a little
Friday: WE ARE BACK

𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗟𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗚𝗜 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗞𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘, 𝗞𝗢Š𝗜𝗖𝗘. 🚬

Looking back at Still Life, Still Smoking, Attila Bagi’s first institutional solo exhibition in Slovakia, recently presented at The Kunsthalle c/o VUNU.

The exhibition put Bagi’s cigarette still lifes at center stage, culminating in a gigantic new painting bringing together all the things that keep returning in his universe: art history, football, cinema, internet folklore, personal memories, everyday objects, and the strange visual debris of contemporary life.

Bagi takes one of painting’s oldest genres and lets it misbehave. Objects become protagonists, references collide, scale shifts, and the still life becomes anything but still.

There is humor, nostalgia, obsession, and a little smoke in the air.

Following The Still is Life at MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts in Debrecen, Still Life, Still Smoking marked another exciting chapter in Bagi’s continuously expanding practice.
