Some stories are told through objects.

Instruments, tools, photographs, books — things shaped by use, time, and memory.

They are often carried across generations and embedded in everyday life.

The stories featured in *Narratives of Hungary* reflect on these details as part of a broader view of the country.

Contributors of "Narratives of Hungary" moved through different types of spaces.
Former palaces and power plants, factories and churches. Trains and cars. Villages, museums, studios. Forests and riverbanks.
As well as through personal memories.

The edition "Narratives of Hungary" brings these environments together as part of a wider view of the country.

Making "Narratives of Hungary" meant traveling across the country.

We've been to places like Mohács during the Busójárás festival, to industrial towns like Ózd, to the lake Balaton and to the river Tisza, to the forests and secluded locations, to artistic places like Szentendre.
And to many other towns, larger or smaller, where people who carry the stories about the country live.

The book was built through being on the road, talking, writing and taking pictures and, also, taking time to observe.

After having released the first Narratives of the series - "Narratives of Budapest" - we knew that we should continue.

But the focus shifted — from the beloved city toward the country and its stories. Much less known and less explored.

Through routes.
Through places and people.
Through the relationships between them.

KEEPING THINGS GOING
As tax season comes around again, just a quick reminder: donating 1% is a simple step, doesn’t cost you anything extra, and really helps us stay active.
We’re very grateful to everyone who chooses to support Panel Irodalmi Egyesület (Panel Literature Association) by donating 1% of their taxes.
Your support helps us keep things running and continue doing what we do — publishing, organizing, and building a space for literature and art.
😎Why it matters:
It helps us stay independent and keep making our own decisions.
It gives us some stability to plan projects ahead.
It supports a growing community of writers, artists, and readers.
🥰What’s coming up:
✅“Narratives of Hungary” is on the way, and we’re working on getting it distributed across the country.
✅This autumn, we’re planning two new publications — one of them a poetry collection about Budapest.
✅We’ll continue running workshops and small events.
✅Panel Online will keep coming out weekly, as a space for new texts and ideas.
All of this comes with ongoing operational costs — printing, production, events, and maintaining our online platform.

We’re not a short-term project — over the years, we’ve built a solid track record and a reputation we care about. We’ve been consistently present, developing our work step by step and staying committed to supporting literature and arts and the people behind it.
Your 1% goes directly into making this possible.

Thank you for your support.

FENNTARTJUK A MŰKÖDÉST
✅Készül a „Narratives of Hungary”.

Köszönjük a támogatást!

At the end of May, we will release a new book, "Narratives of Hungary".
This is a collection of personal essays, articles, and interviews exploring various aspects of life in Hungary.
"Narratives of Hungary" is a companion to "Narratives of Budapest" (released in 2024), an overview of the independent cultural and artistic scene of Hungary’s capital city.
With the new edition, we expand our focus to the entire country, seeking out the voices, places, and traditions that make this country so distinctive. Today, on Panel Online, we are publishing an excerpt from the essay “A Red Suzuki Swift on Hungarian Byways” by Peter Haldeman, featured in the collection.
