Domenico Galli (Parma, 1649 - 1697) was a composer, cellist, sculptor, and luthier. The cello in the image was crafted, along with a maple wood violin, by the luthier Domenico Galli for Duke Francesco II d'Este, Duke of Modena, a great music lover.
The multi-talented Galli composed dozens of sonatas for the cello. Several instruments produced by Galli have been preserved in Italy (photo). Documents prove that the French King Louis XIV commissioned several instruments.
Currently, the cello is housed in the Estense Gallery in Modena, Italy.
