Volim Vrbosku - I Like Vrboska - Island Of Hvar

Volim Vrbosku - I Like Vrboska - Island Of Hvar Vrboska , Hvar , Croatia There are many more theories about the name, but none are reliable. Over the years, that "n" has been "thanks" to some copyist.

Vrboska, (locality Varboska) It was named after the place Vrbanj, since Vrboska originated as the port of Vrbanja or from the Latin verboscam = wooded bay. There is a reliable theory that in the local dialect Vrboska was called Varbonska (ie the wave of Varbanja because Vrbanj is also called Varbonj in the local dialect). History It originates in the Middle Ages, at the latest in the 15th century.

The oldest building in the village is the church of St. Peter, which was built before the 14th century at the crossroads of the historical areas of Pitava and Vrbanja. In the immediate vicinity, on the Hvar ager, are the remains of the ancient Villa Rustica. Matija Ivanić, the leader of the popular uprising on Hvar, was from Vrbanj, and he had a house in Vrboska. During the battles of 1512 the place was destroyed by Venetian troops under the leadership of the providor Sebastian Justinian defeated at the Battle of Jelsa. Church of St. Lawrence was burned. During the 17th century it was reconstructed in the Baroque style. Mary (church-fortress). In 1571, the Turks, under the leadership of Bey Uluc-Alija, burned Vrboska. After that, the Venetian Republic designed and the people of Vrbovec financed the fortification of the Church of St. Mary, known as the church-fortress, completed in 1575. On April 11, 1614, a miracle took place in Vrbovska when St. The Cross, which has since been celebrated as the votive feast of Marash Friday. The place is developing as a fishing-farming community, and the numerous and richly decorated sacral buildings indicate that it was very prosperous. At the beginning of the 20th century, Vrboska had a sardine factory, a shipyard for wooden boats, a regular boat connection with Split and Brač, a hotel and several fishing companies. There was a house of culture, a library and an ambulance in the place. After the Second World War there was an economic decline of the place. Socialist planned economy destroys the economic base of the place due to the diminishing importance of traditional agriculture and fish.
