Today we remember, the first edition of EtC 🥳

On the 18th of August 2018, a group of young soundsystem rascals decided (against all of their better judgement) to organise a one-day free event with and for our soundsystem & circus family.

We called it
"Escape the City." 🏕️

Everyone was doing everything all at once, some proper chaos and order at the same time! Most of us were in our sweet 20s, without any concrete plans for the future, but with high hopes and enthusiasm for miles.

Oh, the memories! 🥹 The idren flipping burgers and playing tunes back to back, the mighty Digitron was still on, TWG had just started their slackline journey, everyone was still babyfaced, and most of the brethren had thick hairlines 😄 We fought tooth and nail to get europalettes and our DIY carpentry skills were far from what they are now...

But it was a raving success! A few hundred people came, lots of kids, dogs, and all the shenanigans and nonsense ETC is now famous for.

After exactly 24 hours, as we tiredly loaded the last van and finished cleaning up, the plan for a multi-day festival the following year was set. 🚐

Nine years later we sold out the last edition before even unveiling the lineup, we built an outernational family that joins us year after year, we watch our children grow up together in play and learning, we built friendships and connections that shall last a lifetime...In short, we made a community. ❤️‍🔥

And this is just the first nine years.

We're planning to expand and explore new horizons with ETC. Soon enough, (if the Lord sees it fit)

Yo Gang! 👋

That's a wrap on the 9th chapter. Five days of bass, dust, salt and I-nity at our little forest by the sea, and honestly, what a ride this one was. 💥

From the sold-out gates to the windy Sunday that couldn't stop the dance, from Jah Tubbys' 55 years to Sandokan's 20, from the Beach Conference to the family closing the controls, this edition had it all.

Big up everyone who carried it: the sound systems and selectors, the artists on the mics and the desks, the workshop holders and circus performers, the volunteers, the bar, kitchen and entrance crews, the photo and video fam, our social media team, the merch crew and market vendors, the Tripsitters keeping us safe. And above all, YOU, the massive who came from all corners with open hearts and dancing feet. This festival is nothing without you, small hands coming together, every single year. 🫶

We hope you left with ringing ears, a full heart and dust in places you'll find in December.

Until we meet again, over the walls and over the barriers.

[ ETC DAY 5 ] Yo Gang! 🫡
After a wild and windy morning, the sun finally smiled upon us in the afternoon, as if Barbariga wanted to say goodbye properly. 🌬️☀️

Sunday at ETC is always family day, and this one was no different. We kicked it off with Burek3000 and closed it with Munchies session running deep into the night, the ETC family on the controls, the very people behind this festival playing us home. ❤️

Nine editions in, and our soundsystem gathering on the beach still feels like the best place on earth. 🙏🏽

On Saturday we sat down with Dougie Douglas Wardrop and Reality Sound System for another Dub Talk session. Strictly reasoning and firsthand knowledge! Big up our host Damien Prophet for guiding the conversation! 🙏

The man behind London's foundational Conscious Sounds studio, sharing three decades of stories from the Camden Market record stall days to voicing legends and shaking foundations worldwide. Alongside him, Reality Souljah brought the vocalist's side of the story, conscious lyrics, righteous delivery, and the wisdom of a true keeper of the culture. 🎛️
