STEREO MC'S
Stereo MC’s are a pioneering English electronic dance and alternative hip-hop group formed in Clapham, London, in 1985. Co-founded by childhood friends and neighbors Rob Birch (vocals) and Nick Hallam (DJ/producer), the duo emerged from a shared love of early hip-hop, funk, and electronic music. Seeking independence, they launched their own record label, Gee Street Records, with DJ Richie Rich and entrepreneur Jon Baker.
After pressing independent vinyl, the duo attracted major attention from 4th & Broadway, leading to their debut album, 33-45-78, in 1989. Expanding their lineup to include drummer Owen If and backing vocalist Cath Coffey, they released 1990's Supernatural. Driven by the hit "Elevate My Mind", the first British hip-hop single to reach the US R&B charts, the band built a fierce reputation touring alongside heavyweights like De La Soul and Happy Mondays.
Stereo MC's achieved a massive global breakthrough with their 1992 masterpiece, Connected. The album peaked at #2 on the UK Albums Chart and spawned international hits like "Connected," "Step It Up," "Creation," and "Ground Level." This monumental success earned them two prestigious BRIT Awards for Best Group and Best Album in 1994. Alongside their own output, they became highly demanded remixers for legendary artists like U2, Madonna, Tricky, and the Jungle Brothers.
Following a brief hiatus to combat touring fatigue and build their own studio, they returned with a DJ-Kicks mix and their explosive fourth album, Deep Down & Dirty (2001). Maintaining a relentless dedication to club culture, they launched the label 'connected' in 2015, establishing themselves within the modern Afro House genre while collaborating with heavyweights like Adam Port, Keinemusik, and Stil vor Talent. Continuing their enduring legacy, the iconic outfit kicked off recent tours with high-profile U.S. dates and a memorable performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
