👑 2001 — Carissa Cooper

As the new millennium began, Utila Carnaval continued to grow into something much bigger than a local celebration.

By 2001, people were coming from across the Bay Islands and beyond to experience what had become the biggest and most anticipated event in the Bay Islands—a week filled with music, dancing, parades, celebration, and unforgettable memories. 🎭🌴🎉

That year, Carissa Cooper proudly represented Utila as the Carnaval Queen of 2001. 👑✨

🎭 Year 2 – 2000 🎭
The Year Carnaval Became More Than a Celebration
As Utila entered a new millennium, Carnaval continued to grow—not only as a celebration, but as a symbol of COMMUNITY.

Following the devastating Henderson Store fire in late 1999, the 2000 Utila Carnaval played an important role in BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER to help raise funds toward establishing the island’s fire station.

It was a reminder that Carnaval has always been about more than music, costumes, and parades. It has also been about unity, resilience, and neighbors helping neighbors when it mattered most.

This moment became an important chapter in the history of Utila Carnaval and demonstrated the true spirit of our island.

The journey continues…

It was created as a community celebration following the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch, with the goal of bringing people together while raising funds to help rebuild the island.

😌 The first Carnaval did not sell alcohol. The focus was on family, community, and fundraising for those affected by the hurricane.
