Alex has spearheaded and completed a series of collaborative projects with communities in the UK, India, Brazil, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines through his studio Eriksson Furunes. He is currently doing an Artistic PhD entitled “Learning from Bayanihan/Dugnad” (NTNU, 2016-2021) that explores the role of these traditions in participative planning, design, and building processes—a critical reflection of his previous and ongoing collaborative projects in Asia and Europe. His project in Norway, “Dugnad Days,” was featured at the Oslo Architecture Triennale 2019.

Sudar is a former associate at Leandro V. Locsin Partners, Sudar acts as the principal of i.incite design and is currently exploring critical construction as a means to express shared meanings through architecture. He was a co-curator of “Muhon: Traces of an Adolescent City” at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Sudar and Alex worked on the Streetlight Tagpuro, a post-disaster rebuilding project in Tacloban after super-typhoon Haiyan. For the project, they won the 2019 World Architecture Festival Small Project of the Year.

Orient Occident Atelier | OOA is an interdisciplinary architectural, interior and urban design studio. We focus on discovering, researching and utilizing the interdependence of “objects” and connections with surrounding space as design inspirations. OOA encompasses modern interpretations of Eastern and Western aesthetics while integrating nature and function.

OOA is co-founded by Magic Kwan and Kenrick Wong. Kenrick is a registered architect in Hong Kong, co-founder of OOA and AGS registered charity, and has over 10 years of architectural community project and film production experiences in Hong Kong, Cambodia and Southeast Asia. While Magic, a graduate of UC Berkeley and HKU with First Class Honour, is the co-founder of OOA having over 12 years of professional and teaching experiences in the US, Japan and Hong Kong focusing on community, environment and fabrication techniques.

"Good design should be based on the perspectives of the user, taking their culture, characteristics, and habits as an entry point."

Designers Kenrick Wong and Magic Kwan of OOA believe good design should “pursue feelings of ease, equilibrium, and enlivenment.” By collaborating with government bodies and social enterprises to design and build solutions to environmental and social problems, the duo employs human-centricity. “Good design should be based on the perspectives of the user, taking their culture, characteristics, and habits as an entry point,” they state. Earlier this year, ahead of their upcoming Bishop Hill Underground Service Reservoir Project, the team released a series of VR simulations, animated videos, and panoramas of the excavated underground space to help raise public awareness around preserving Hong Kong’s heritage and examining our sense of ethnic, cultural, and historical identity. The project will officially launch in November as part of BODW CityProg 城區活動 2021.

謝謝 Design Incubation Programme 設計創業培育計劃 設計創業培育計劃 介紹 OOA 如何遊走看似衝突的概念產生新的設計意念。

【DIP 創業故事】 結合科技與文化、創新與承傳

從與 OOA 東西建築的交談中，會發現一些很奧妙的火花。

「東」vs「西」?
「新」vs「舊」?
「創新」vs「承傳」？
「科技」vs「文化」？

同一時空下，我們在OOA香港的工作室與Kenrick實體見面，而身處美國的Magic則在電腦螢幕中。單單是與他們對話的形式，已感到他們對空間結合的靈活度。

在他們的項目中，Kenrick和Magic亦將科技融入建築設計，希望打破傳統建築於實體空間上的限制，以一個有效和方便的途徑向大眾宣揚建築設計的影響力。對他們來說，科技的應用不單是一個設計師工具，更是文化承傳的載體。「創新」和「承傳」、「新」和「舊」絕不是互相對抗，反而是互相補足。Magic強調：「建築設計不應該只限於某一虛實形態。」早前於深水埗發現逾百年的歷史的主教山配水庫， 特意製作一系列地下蓄水池結構空間的建築虛擬景象，以3D動畫、VR虛擬實境和360度圖片帶領大眾自主探索主教山蓄水池，分享無法經常到達現場的空間狀況，提供探索香港過去歷史的工具，從而提高公眾意識，討論如何保護和創新活化遺產。

他們另外一個項目 —「列印觀塘」戶外實時互動藝術裝置也反映 如何結合新舊，用創新的意念追溯文化的回憶。觀塘是八十年代時印刷廠房的集中地，這藝術裝置代表一部巨型列印機，同時紀念褪色的印刷工業。Kenrick親自為我們講解裝置的構造，解釋鏡頭如何控制筆掃，以柯式印刷的四種原色「列印」出參與者的剪影，此設計最近更榮獲香港智營設計大賞2021。

二人都認為建築從來不僅是實體空間的塑造，更是大眾生活的媒介、思考問題的模式以及文化的寫照載體；透過挑戰傳統建築的定義，創造讓人反思的設計，構建城市的故事。
