Unlikelihood

Unlikelihood How did we spend time with each other before social media? We set each meet up in a different unique space.

Unlikelihood curates whimsical day-ventures to bring back magic and awe into meeting strangers and having fun. We are two escape room enthusiasts, film and theatre aficionados putting our heads together and bringing a unique type of game-night meetup to Hong Kong. Each event will be based on a different trending cult movie and a surrounding theme. We use film to open up conversations that you will

rarely get a chance to delve into in regular social situations. Just as an example of what’s in the works, it could be a futuristic suspenseful Arrival-style game show that revolves around language, a retro La La Land night of music and charades.

😲 Our own Villainelle's in the house!

🙃 It was a blast kicking off Toronto's first edition of Unlikelihood with a tribute to one of TV's wildest and most oddly endearing characters, Killing Eve's Villanelle. The cast and I had the most fun bringing out our inner moxy and sass, and so glad to have been able to share that with you.

😬 And so our tradition continues! After a long day of connecting with strangers, it's always fun to celebrate with a group photo. Unlikelihood loves paying tribute to the films that inspired our events.

🙌 Here we are... paying homage to Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Shoplifters" in a more lighthearted way!

🙋‍♂️ Hint: Watch out for hands!

🦋 This was a new step... I was so nervous coordinating NO. 7 from abroad but I'm so glad I decided to take a chance.

🌴To the actors, to the participants, to the photographers, to my family, to the hosts, thank you for helping me create this world.

🤩 Here are my favorite moments from NO. 7. I'm so excited to share that a video is also on its way...

🌞 I'm really thankful to be invited to participate in Gaming for Change tomorrow, Hong Kong's first symposium exploring interactive mediums and social change!

✨ Organised by Press Start Hong Kong, Singing Cicadas and Eaton HK, they've come up with an interactive afternoon consisting of panels, breakout workshops, and a marketplace. I'm excited to share a bit more on the origins of Unlikelihood and some thoughts too about the potential of applied theatre in destigmatizing and humanising loneliness.

😄 I can't wait to learn more from this community!
Join us tomorrow at 2:30pm at Eaton HK!

What’s Unlikelihood?

In April 2017, I began with the question “How might we make social events more welcoming for introverts and people who don’t feel like they fit in to a circle?”. Unlikelihood is an initiative that reimagines what a social looks and feels like. A social experiment with a theatrical spin, Unlikelihood’s goal is to break up cliques and spark intimate dialogue between unlike-minded strangers. Taking inspiration from movies, our use of storytelling and games encourages everyone to open up with one another in a playful manner. ... Finding friendships in fast-paced cities can be lonesome as networking settings often feel impersonal and insular. This is a challenge particularly for introverts or newcomers who have few contacts in town.

Unlikelihood reimagines the social through introverts’ eyes to create experiences that are personalized and exploratory. ...

  • Problem - “Insular” : Navigating who to talk to and how to get past the smalltalk is rarely easy. It’s natural to stick to familiar people and familiar environments. We like to get to know participants before our events (Over a cup of coffee is our pick but there’s other options!) We split up people who may know each other and introduce you to people from a different background, culture, industry or even generation. Don’t worry about not knowing what to talk about. That’s where our games and puzzles come in. Our games are carefully personalized to draw forth the interests and expertise amongst your new group. Now you can jump past the small talk and get to know each other’s personalities in a whole new light.

  • Problem “Impersonal” : Social media has encouraged us to make more decisions based off of first impressions. People are more likely to write someone off before giving them opportunities to open up. We wrap our games within deeper stories to cultivate an environment for intimate listening and learning. Brought to life by our actors, our stories champion the admirable adventures of introverted, outsider figures. We illuminate the human in their esoteric, complex qualities in order to open up more compassionate, thoughtful conversations.
