“We Are the Things Monsters Love”
Alex Huda Alex Huda announces a three-venue solo exhibition tour of his critically acclaimed portrait series, We Are the Things Monsters Love.
Developed in collaboration with Holok Chen Holok A-Oui Acoba and the Voidpunks—a community of LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodivergent minds, and creative outcasts in Hong Kong who forge non-human identities known as Voidsonas—We Are the Things Monsters Love is a documentary portraiture project that fuses ancient Chinese shamanic traditions with the city’s emerging Voidpunk counterculture.
Reimagining the Nine Deities from Qu Yuan‘s 3rd-century BCE poem, Jiu Ge (The Nine Songs), as cyberpunk monsters who embrace the Voidpunks, the work explores how individuals rejected by society can transmute the alien parts of their identities into sources of divine power and unconventional intimacy. Holok Chen, a well-known figure in Hong Kong’s alternative and q***r scenes, serves as the Oracle of this community and was instrumental in shaping the project‘s collaborative direction.
The project was developed during Huda’s Director‘s Fellowship at the International Center of Photography in New York. The portraits visualize the invisible ”divine energy“ flowing through the unchosen, offering a sanctuary where becoming a "monster“ is not despair—but a radical reclamation of power.
