NEW ARTIST ALERT: Welcome Karen Fong to HKARTS!

Karen Hiu Ying Fong was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Vancouver, where she majored in Interior Design.

When she was young, she was always interested in many forms of art and design. She is currently exploring different mediums such as watercolour, gouache, and oil painting.

Karen’s time in Canada - where she was able to spend winters snowboarding in the mountains - fostered her enduring love for nature. After returning to the crowded and busy city of Hong Kong, she soon found that she missed the peace and serenity of the Canadian wilderness. Many of her works are therefore inspired by those natural landscapes: clouds and mountains, rivers and streams, forests and valleys.

Using different techniques, the tranquil and picturesque narratives she paints emerge from her memory of nature’s beauty and her desire to evoke inner peace in those who view her work.

NEW ARTIST ALERT: Welcome to HKARTS Agnes Chow

Agnes has always had a keen eye for beauty, working in graphic design for beauty and luxury brands in 4As agency.

As she enters a new phase in life, she chooses to find beauty in Chinese calligraphy, appreciating the simplicity of its strokes and the richness of its history and literature, as well as the understated elegance of the colour black. Her creative space, "Black Ink," serves as her love letter to life and to herself as she embarks on this new journey as an artist.

Drawing from the yin and yang aesthetics in Chinese philosophy, she enjoys starting with water and then adding traditional Chinese in black ink and gold ink to observe the independent flow of ink and water, She uses stone ground paper so she can control the water and ink to create mountains and compositions that she finds appealing. The relative application of yin and yang—coexistence, harmony, transformation, and the interplay of emptiness and form—guides the gentle flow of direction and the strong brushstrokes that define the scene.

She also has a deep appreciation for Chinese calligraphy, especially the Wei dynasty, style of large character script. The bold and thick strokes are another element of her creative thought. Through the historical context of characters and the form of brushwork, she expresses abstract ideas, using the shapes of characters as a foundation. This breathes life into still objects and embodies a pursuit of natural harmony, becoming a part of her every dark glamorous world.

Experimental through the compatibility of shades with the flows of ink. Traditional Chinese ink painting meets contemporary art elements and discovers another visual communication in art.
