🧱🌿 Renewal Ceramic Tableware Workshop Recap🌿🧱

In early November offered a meaningful opportunity for TOCHI LAB to connect with the wider public, thanks to ACS for connecting us with Link Sustainability Lab who invited us into the programme.💚✨

Many people use ceramics daily without fully understanding how they are made, what the material can do and why it lasts. 🫳🏻🏺Through this workshop, we aim to give participants a clearer understanding of ceramic materials, whilst also showing that ceramics can be recycled and renewed, rather than treated as disposable.

We also encourage everyone to consider ways to reduce ceramic waste as small everyday decisions can make a real impact.

Over 40+ participants joined us to explore our reformulated clay. They explored hand building skills, experimented with textures and asked thoughtful questions. Seeing the public engage with circular materials and rethink waste is truly meaningful. Thank you to Link Sustainability Lab for providing a space where open exchange, learning and creativity can take place. 🤲💫

If you are interested in hosting a recycled ceramics workshop, feel free to message us.

*✦ CH.3:The process of ceramics recycling 🔄 ✦*

How does a discarded ceramic cup transform into recycled ceramic products after being broken down? ⚒️
We collect ceramic waste from local ceramic studios, schools and other sources,
and then proceed with the following series of steps in our studio:

Sorting 🤏🏻 → Crushing 🔨 → Grinding 🥣 → Sieving ⏳ → Blending 👐🏻

By breaking down the ceramic waste and starting from scratch, we create recycled materials, exploring more possibilities for discarded ceramics. 💡
These recycled materials can be used to create new ceramic products or even bio-rocks🪸, allowing corals and other marine life to attach and grow on them.
We can also assist in creating unique custom products using discarded ceramics as raw materials! 🏺🍶🫖

Q: Can ceramic recycling be done at home, or does it need to be sent to a factory/studio?

A: Ceramic recycling involves processes which require specialized machinery, like grinding and sieving. If everyone were to purchase such equipment individually, it wouldn’t be environmentally friendly or economically efficient.
So for now, the most practical approach is to send discarded ceramics to professional recycling facilities or studios, where resources can be centralized for more effective and efficient recycling. ♻️

Feel free to leave any questions about ceramic recycling below! We are happy to answer them for you 👇🏻

Our Ceramics Cycle Project ♲ ✦*

*✦ CH.2: Our Ceramics Cycle Project ✦*
In the previous post, we talked about how ceramic waste is challenging to naturally decompose.
So, can ceramics be recycled or upcycled like paper or plastic? 🤨

In order to encourage more people to recycle ceramics, TOCHI LAB has been dedicated to implementing the "Ceramics Cycle" project since 2024.🤲🏻
We aim to give ceramic waste a second life ✨, while addressing the issue of landfill saturation, making the ceramic industry more environmentally friendly and sustainable ♻️.

Through organizing public and school events, such as setting up booths at green markets, hosting ceramic upcycling workshops and talks, we aim to promote the concept of **ceramics are recyclable** to more people, hoping that everyone can have a deeper understanding and awareness of ceramic waste recycling. 🔍

*✦ CH.1: How much do you know about ceramic waste? 🚮
Ceramics are ubiquitous in our daily lives. Their hardness 💪🏻, heat resistance 🔥, waterproof 💦, and insulating⚡️ properties make them suitable for a wide range of everyday items, from bowls and plates 🍽️ for dining, vases 🏺 for flowers, to electronic components 🔌, and even construction materials 🧱.

But have you ever thought about what happens to ceramic products when they are discarded as waste?
Where do they go and how long does it take to decompose completely? 🌱

While ceramics' durability is advantageous, they are also challenging to biodegrade, with a decomposition time comparable to that of glass waste 😧.
If you toss a ceramic plate today, it may still exist a thousand years from now!

China‘s ceramic industry generates up to eighteen million tons of ceramic waste annually. 🫨
The issue of landfill exhaustion in Hong Kong is also becoming increasingly severe, with non-degradable ceramic waste piling up.

In recent years, ceramic construction waste are used as a type of reclamation material.
What do you think could be other possibilities for ceramic waste besides sending it to landfills? 🧐💡
