It's a month and two weeks since Ms. Ruth, a friend and work colleague, handed me Trevor Noah's 'Born a Crime'. To be honest, it has taken this long for me to come around reading it because I couldn't imagine Trevor blowing my socks off with an amazing story, but boy was I fooled. There was a point while reading when I paused and thought, Hmm. This reminds me so much of my best memoir, 'Angela's Ashes'. At face value, Trevor would pass for what Nigerians call 'Ajebutter' due to his biracial features, but indulging his story you come to realize he had it hard compared to your average middle-class Nigerian family. Trevor writes about pre and post apartheid South Africa, more importantly, he writes about the ridiculousness of racism, and the dangers of patriarchy. 'Born a Crime' ranks second on my list of best memoirs ever written.
