Today marks the final day of our exhibition at TUVE Hotel, our very first collaboration with a Hong Kong hotel✨👏🏻

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who visited, experienced the space, and shared in our vision — where art and the quiet elegance of hotel living come together.

A heartfelt thank-you to and for making this collaboration possible.

“Concrete in the Nature 1” by Kevin Mak

At the least expected location, the most Brutalist sculpture in Hong Kong was found in a public housing estate that is slightly isolated from the city centre. The sculpture was designed to be a water feature that allow water to wash through the stone and concrete. While there is no more water today that can be found at the sculpture, Kevin enjoyed capturing the filtering sunlight washing down onto concrete surfaces. No other Brutalist moment in Hong Kong seems to be aesthetically as abstract as this one.

“Concrete in the Nature 2” by Kevin Mak

Kevin has made dozens of other photos of this Brutalist sculpture with rest of the Brutalist buildings in the background, but only this single photo with nature in the background and a leaning tree in the foreground. That was the moment he first realized, in a conversation on the natural setting of the architecture with a TV programme host at his 7th visit to the school, that ‘perhaps the trees here actually resonate with the forms of the architecture over the years.’ The phenomenon is similar to how the leaves from two adjacent trees wouldn’t grow to overlap with each other under the sunlight.

Being a concrete sculpture within the legendary 1981 Brutalist addition to the historical St Stephen’s College campus – it’s perhaps the most artistic and the least functional element in the building complex – as a ceremonial feature & a bell tower accommodating a bell made in 1930. However, Kevin strongly believes that every little human creation and gesture would form a certain coherence with the lives around over time, and we might all have under-estimated how our way of life have been largely shaped by the fast-changing complex urban environment around us.

Discover “Brutal Trail” by Kevin Mak- an unaltered perspective on brutalist concrete 🩶

-

As a rare example of brutalist concrete finish that still remains unaltered in Hong Kong, these semi-cylindrical cores of Adam Schall Residence in the Chinese University Campus are Kevin’s most favourite structures in the school where he studied architecture for 5 years. Similar types of craft concrete finishes with beautiful strips pattern were once very popular material expressions in both buildings and infrastructures in the city in Kevin’s childhood memory.

Kevin made several attempts to revisit the same wall over the past few years and thought he would be able to shoot better photos of the wall under a different sunlight, yet the best harmony has already been captured in the very first trip when the 4-year Brutalist Architecture research began.

Kowloon Forest by Alexey Marfin offers a poetic lens into everyday life inside a Hong Kong apartment block. Through five quietly unfolding stories, the work reveals a layered portrait of intimacy, isolation, and urban rhythm.

Alexey is a British filmmaker working between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. With a background in architecture and visual effects, his films are known for their immersive detail and emotional depth.

Kowloon Forest has screened internationally and won Best Live Action VR at the Vancouver Film Festival. Now featured in the MUSE collection as a still that captures the atmosphere of a city constantly in flux.
