Shigeo Otake: Agoraphilia at White Cube

I have a soft spot for whimsical art that not only feels like a chance to peek into a mysterious world but also creates the illusion of historical depth. Everything works perfectly together in these paintings: the medium is egg tempera, an old, pre-oil painting technique, typical for the early Renaissance. The colour palette gives these daily scenes a good dose of nostalgia. Are these historical paintings from a bizarre universe of strange creatures co-existing with obviously sentient fungi? Are these naive depictions of what a lost traveller had seen in faraway lands? Or are these just feverish dreams?

Highly recommend this exhibition if you love Shaun Tan books, Northern Renaissance, and Japanese folklore (and maybe mycology? or at least if you are intrigued by fungi)

Nature, Abstracted at Ben Brown Fine Arts

Whenever the subject matter of an exhibition is related to landscapes, I immediately think about Sentences on Landscape by Gleb Simonov (because I believe that in every matter, one should seek out an expert):

“Landscape has no requirements. An image may lack horizon, discernible perspective, shadows. It may be completely abstract. The fact that a sense of space can emerge without a specific hint to suggest it — means that space is uncanny, that something we think is a necessary condition of presence itself is a form of presence. Still there, when the sun goes down”.

Iori Nagashima: Between at WKM Gallery

I find an unexpected moment of peace looking at these paintings. Mundane scenes, daily observations, naturally occurring compositions. No big statements, even though there are layers and layers of contemplation behind these works — discovering and understanding a city during the art residency will inevitably lead to a lot of learning. I think them being so quiet and contained is what was so soothing. Just a much needed moment of peace.

Elah Wong Tsoi Wai: Wild Awhile at Gallery Exit

Very layered in all meanings, abstracted paintings that are filled with symbolism and personal references. Was pleasantly surprised to see ceramics made in collaboration with ceramicist Benny To Kai On. Can we have more collabs between HK artists, please?

Tobe Kan: Good Afternoon, Good Evening, Good Night at Gallery Exit

Tobe’s works always give this distinctive soft and fresh feel, very soothing yet vivid. New experiments with antique plates and objects made me imagine the porcelain dinnerware set — wouldn’t it look great?
The unusual seconds part of the exhibition is a collaboration with artist collective CPY. Using photos from Chinese marketplaces and platforms, changed and styled with AI and painted by anonymous Chinese painters, the art collective raises the question of the origins and outsourcing of the styles and influences.

Domingo Milella: Liminal at Sotheby’s Maison

A perfect place to showcase photographs of images from Paleolithic caves — Grotto always feels like a cave itself. If you feel weary, overstimulated, and exhausted by the pace of our modern life, go see the exhibition. The darkness and quiet will help to imagine how these images were seen in the era they were made. Powerful, bold, and elegant. We know nothing about those people, but we can experience the same awe, the numinosum, the mysterium tremendum.
Domingo called the Cave a bomb shelter for the imagination, and these photographs transfer the energy and impact.

Dave Ho Lok Chung: Sculpting in Wind at SC Gallery

What a satisfying combination of painting, woodworking, and ceramics skills! And yes, these “paintings” of eroded rocks and trees, beautifully shaped by the constant strong winds, are made of porcelain. Most of them were produced in Jingdezhen, the famous Chinese porcelain capital, and all the frames were made by the artist himself.

Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now at M+

Mostly close-ups that are supposed to serve as a reminder that it’s last week to see the exhibition. I bet nobody needs to be reminded of who Lee Bul is, especially in the IG post format.
(My favorite section was the third one, that imitates the artist’s studio and offers a glimpse of creative process)

Isaac Chong Wai: An Intimate Surrender at Tai Kwun Contemporary

Taking inspiration from Chinese novel and movie Farewell My Concubine, Isaac Chong Wai explores the notion of intimacy, the contrast of tenderness and rigidity, the gender performance both on and off stage.
