Hazel Wong Mei Yin: Receding Scenery at Gallery Exit

Very cinematic exhibition. Brings back so many memories of regular trips between my old hometown and a city I was living — long hours (it was before not only social media but even mobile internet) of just staring in the window. Not nostalgic at all, but probably I miss that very special type of boredom that was so fruitful but is so difficult to recreate now.

Dony Cheng Hung: Time Objects at Gallery Exit

Very solid and consistent body of works, loved them so much! They are surreal and alien, enigmatic and weirdly ritualistic. Made me think about paintings by de Chirico and short stories by Ray Bradbury at the same time.

Exhibition period: 21.03–25.04
Gallery address: 13/F, 25 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Aberdeen

Bouie Choi: Those warm and unwavering existences at Grotto FA

Departing from narrative scenes in these new works, Bouie moves closer to fairytales and city mythology. The works are still dreamy and don’t reveal direct meaning, relying this time more on associations and impressions. This feeling is supported with the technique: less details, more paint flows and washes, and active use of the wood grain.
Curated by Joyce Hei-ting Wong

Coco Capitán: Imagination Investments at ArtisTree

I started with the third part of the exhibition and it was the best decision — I was very lucky to catch the sunset, which made the whole experience even more special. Magnificent views and a slightly futuristic setup contributed to the nostalgic and poignant atmosphere. Thousands of old photos: faces, kids, events, views, pets — all those once important memories that were preserved and then lost, gone, forgotten.
Well, at least until this moment when you can adopt and preserve them again.
The remaining two parts of the showcase — Naïvy and I Read While I Walk — are way more lighthearted.

Exhibition period: 19.03–26.04
Venue address: 1/F, Cambridge House Taikoo Place, and 67/F One Island East, Quarry Bay

Seungtaik Jang: Layers to Essence at Soluna Fine Art

Glowing paintings. Masterfully done layering sheer paint creates luminous effect and depth. What a beautiful way to experience colour.

Phoebe Hui: The Lurking Void at HKADC

Your worst office nightmare, animated. I am totally in awe, in love, and totally won’t tell you what exactly I said the moment I entered the space (because I don’t curse here).
The only complaint is the duration of the exhibition, I want to see this terrifying chair-millipede several times again!

Exhibition period: 21.03–19.04

The Art of Movement by Design Trust

The best possible place for the annual Design Trust’s exhibition — maybe even too perfect, to the degree of being a distraction. I suggested Marisa Yiu should sell tickets just to showcase the view, but luckily she decided to keep to just a gala dinner and an auction.
My personal favorite was a fountain by Orange Terry ; if you the one, who got it — I am very jealous.

Exhibition period: 27.03–12.04

Kong Lingnan: The Fools Journey at Capsule Shanghai

Since these 22 paintings are the artist’s versions of the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot, you could technically randomly re-hang them daily and interpret the results. They are oil on wood, so they are pretty sturdy (the only problem is that you’d have to buy all of them).

Koji Onaka: Distance at Blue Lotus Gallery

Sometimes it is rather difficult to write about photography and not to use trite and banal phrases like “snaps of reality” or “capturing the fleeting moments”. But that’s exactly what they are. Small daily scenes, some feel familiar, others look like past times that will never happen again.
