🦖 How is watching two gamers hunt down digital monsters, live and in person, any different from watching other performances? Chik Chi Him and Philipp build this piece around Monster Hunter — not just because they love the game, but because it turns gamified killing into something oddly communal, gathering hunters together. By using unusual weapons and tactical decisions as part of the work, they turn gameplay into a live creative process that sits somewhere between play and stage dramaturgy.

💁 介紹 Stelios Manousakis 及其作品 Instruments of convenience / Instruments of surveillance，此作品為 UNHEARD Sound & Music Festival 聲音祭 的節目之一。

🛜這件結合擴增實境聲音與 WiFi 感測技術的裝置，將智能裝置的監控感轉化為沉浸式聲音空間，亦讓觀眾體驗一件無需觸碰的樂器，一邊遊走於「便利」、「數據」與「控制」。

🟢 裝置開放時間為今日起至29日，以及31日至8月1日，每日中午12時至晚上10時。Stelios 亦將於星期日主持工作坊。

🔸 他現正於香港逗留兩星期，作為 Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong（CMHK） 與海牙 iii 之間藝術家駐留交流計劃的一部分。

🛜This augmented reality sound and WiFi sensing installation turns smart-device surveillance into an immersive sonic environment, and even lets you play a touchless musical instrument while thinking about the strange world of convenience, data, and control.

🟢The installation is open daily from today until the 29th, and again from the 31st to August 1, from 12 noon to 10 pm. Stelios will also be hosting a workshop on Sunday.

🔸He’s here in Hong Kong for two weeks as part of an artist residency program between Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) and iii at The Hague.

《聽覺外掛》Ear Plug-in: 工作坊與講述表演 Workshop and Lecture-performance

🫳當聲音不再是唯一的感知媒介時，我們該如何聆聽？
🫳When sound is no longer the only medium of perception, how do we listen?

香港藝術中心、聲音掏腰包 及現在音樂（CMHK）攜手邀請藝術家鄭雅茵 和孫禮賢 .shuen 一起探索聾人、弱聽和健聽群體在聆聽方面的共同體驗。透過運用振動、動作、語言和具身感知，探究不同感官交織的多元聆聽方式。

作為 .hk 聲音祭一部分，這活動包括兩個參與式工作坊和一場講述表演，將於香港藝術中心及香港逸東酒店舉行。門票詳情可於Link in Bio / Eventbrite 上瀏覽。

Together with Hong Kong Arts Centre, and CMHK have invited artists Cheng Nga Yan and Larry Shuen .shuen to initiate a research on the shared experiences of listening among Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing communities. Through vibration, movement, language, and embodied perception, they investigate diverse modes of listening that emerge through the interplay of different senses.

As part of .hk this year, the two workshops and one lecture-performance will be hosted in Hong Kong Arts Centre and Eaton Hong Kong. Tickets are now available through Link in Bio and Eventbrite.

1️⃣ 工作坊 Workshop 1: 聲音裝置製作 DIY Listening Device （由鄭雅茵帶領 led by Cheng Nga Yan）

參加者將親手製作一個以呈現節奏為主的聲音裝置，從視覺與觸覺出發，藉燈光、震動以及不同日常物料帶來的聲音質感，連結日常生活中的多元聆聽經驗。
Participants will create a DIY rhythm-focused listening device, exploring listening through visual and tactile experiences. Using light, vibration, and the sonic textures of everyday materials, the workshop invites participants to connect with the diverse ways we experience listening in daily life.

2️⃣ 工作坊 Workshop 2: 聲音漫步 Sound Walk （由孫禮賢帶領 led by Larry Shuen)

這次工作坊將帶領大家以身體去感受環境的物理震動，透過這場另類的聆聽體驗，重新發現生活中被我們忽略對聲音與空間的聯感。
This workshop invites participants and their bodies to sense the physical vibrations of their surroundings. Through this alternative listening experience, participants will rediscover the often-overlooked sensory connections between sound and space in everyday life.

🔩 You think you can assemble a piece of furniture 🪑 using the manuals? How about creating a manual for others to assemble your instruments?

🛠️ 識得用說明書就覺得自己係砌傢俬嘅高手？不如試下整返張說明書教其他人砌返你件樂器！

🪛 We’ve spent a lot of time talking about building our own instruments and experimental devices — but much less about what it means to document them, and the stories embedded in the process of making.

We’re excited to welcome to work with us on exploring instruction manuals not simply as technical guides, but as creative works and living forms of documentation.

Together, we’ll rethink how making, sharing, and sustaining artistic practices can happen through open tools and collective knowledge.

🧰 我們一直在討論如何製作自己的樂器與實驗裝置，卻很少真正去思考：該如何記錄它們，以及記錄「製作」這件事情本身。

本工作坊專為已有樂器或聲音裝置創作經驗、並有意為作品進行紀錄的藝術家而設。我們將探討如何利用開放源碼 (FLOSS) 工具撰寫說明書，將紀錄視為一種「創意行為」而非單純的技術處理。此外，工作坊亦會反思創作實踐的永續性，探討藝術與技術的「過時」問題，以及這些實踐對人類與環境的深遠影響。

The workshop is aimed at artists and instrument builders and are interested in documenting their work. This workshop focuses on how to create instruction manuals using FLOSS tools, treating documentation as a creative act rather than a purely technical one.

🥸 Meet the Agnostic Box: the “almighty musical device” every artist secretly — or openly — wants in their setup.

🤓 Agnostic Box 登場：這部萬能音樂裝置，正是每位藝術家偷偷（或攞正牌咁）想放進自己 setup 裡的神奇工具。

Equipped with three buttons, three potentiometers, an accelerometer/gyroscope, and a healthy amount of colorful LEDs (because every instrument deserves a little flair), it’s powered by an ESP32 MCU that lets the box become whatever its owner imagines. BLE MIDI, OSC, digital synthesis — if you can dream it, the Agnostic Box will probably find a way to do it.

它配備三個按鈕、三個電位器、一組加速度／陀螺儀感測器，還有一堆色彩繽紛的 LED（來一點閃令令吧✨）。核心由 ESP32 MCU 驅動，讓這個盒子能隨你心意自由變形。BLE MIDI、OSC、數位合成——只要你想得到，它大概都做得到。

💫 A huge thank you to Navid Navab for joining us this past Friday!

Navid shared insights into their creative approaches across a range of remarkable works, including “Organism: In Turbulence” and “Organism + Excitable Chaos”, recently presented at multiple festivals. They also spoke about their ongoing research in sonic gestural composition and performance.

It was a pleasure getting to know Navid through their unique interpretation of “liveliness,” and how this perspective shapes the way they find meaning in the world.

We also enjoyed learning more about their involvement in the Montréal artist community, including Perte de Signal and Les Ateliers Belleville

Finally, thank you to Current Plans for supporting this event, Helen .groundprod for the lovely photos and to everyone who came by to spend time with us!

Open Call: CMHK × Perte de Signal Residency Exchange 2026
Artist Residency in Montreal for Hong Kong–based artist

Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) invites proposals from Hong Kong–based artists for a new international residency exchange with Perte de Signal , an artist‑run centre for digital and media arts in Montreal, Canada.

This residency extends CMHK’s ongoing exchange initiatives (previously hosted by in The Hague) to a new context that foregrounds experimental practices at the intersection of sound, image, performance, and technology.

We are seeking proposals that explore sound in relation to digital media, image, and performance. Projects may involve, but are not limited to:

🫳 Cross-discipline practices focusing in sound, also engaging with digital, audiovisual, or interactive media
🫳 Experimental music that expands into spatial sound, video, or installation
🫳 Research‑driven practices involving custom instruments, interfaces, or software
🫳 Cross‑disciplinary works that connect sonic experimentation with critical perspectives on technology, networks, or digital culture

As part of the residency, the artist will have the opportunity to take part in the workshop Introduction to Modular Video Synthesis workshop organised by Perte de Signal (June 13th and 20th).

This training offers an immersion into contemporary practices of modular video synthesis through a combined theoretical, historical, and hands-on approach.

Participants will explore the tools, languages, and aesthetics specific to this medium while developing an active studio-based practice.

The residency artist is also encouraged to participate in the public performance event (June 27th), as part of the centre’s programming and community engagement activities.

A jury composed of representatives from CMHK and Perte de Signal will review all applications.
