~In the Afternoon~ ~午後~

This artwork showcases the abundant use of bright colours which is usually rare in traditional Chinese paintings. Once again, Fan Hongbin uses the technique of flattening colours making it simple and abstract. The colours red and yellow are prominent on the lady’s dress, both colours going back and forth to show depth and elegance. The bright placement of flowers behind shows a freehand style giving each colour its own rhythm of lightness and weight.

Today’s artwork of the week is none other than Fan Hongbin’s The Flight. He uses bright and full colours and flattens it making it more abstract and simple. Fan inherited the traditional and artistic conception of a harmonious deal. This is also seen from the painting on the harmonious use of solid and overlapping colours. The use of red fluctuates between thick and elegant lines while the colour yellow moves between fullness and sleekness.

Moments of Power and Passions

Moments of Power and Passion is a collection of paintings which celebrates the healing hand of art. The artist, Zhou Lian Wah, shares with her audience how through articulating her emotions in an expressive language helps her to triumph over the dark moments of life. In her case the language is colors and shades.

These paintings therefore represent a story of her spiritual reaction to the influx of intense emotions derived from sorrowful experiences and the contemplation of their relation to what is important in life. Zhou presents each scene and chapter of her story in varied combinations of colors and shades. Each color represents an emotion with myriad shades representing the varied degrees of intensity of that emotion.
