I’ve been trying to gather my thoughts over the past two days as I watch my hometown endure the deadliest fire in decades. Tai Po holds a dear place in my heart, it’s the neighborhood that sparked my local food tours in Hong Kong 10 years ago. I used to visit Tai Po Market weekly on my tours, and seeing this disaster unfold feels eerily like we’re reliving 2019 all over again. The frustration, the despair, the hopelessness… it’s all too familiar.

With so many supplies and volunteers now pouring into Tai Po for humanitarian support and animal rescue, I found myself wondering what I could do to help. Then it hit me. Perhaps I can start with what I love most: making sense of the world through reading.

After losing my soul cat this summer, I’ve been navigating my own journey of grief, spending months reading books on loss and trying to find words for such complicated feelings.

If you’re reading this, please know you’re not alone. Here are a few books I’ve turned to over the years on grief and loss. These words have brought me hope and solace during some of my darkest days and nights, and I hope they can bring you comfort too.

New by-the-glass alert: Muxin 2022 Chardonnay

Meet Muxin 2022, a Chardonnay born 2,700m above sea level in Shangri-La, Yunnan. Made by Mu Chao, a winemaker with Burgundy know-how and a vision to showcase China’s high-altitude potential, this is a wine that’s rewriting the rules.

Aged 14 months in 40% new French oak, the 2022 vintage is a masterclass in balance: expect vibrant citrus, white flowers, and brioche on the nose, followed by a rich, textured palate with electric acidity and a long, mineral finish.

With only 1,000 bottles produced, this is a rare opportunity to taste one of China’s most exciting wines. Available on our by-the-glass list at 67 on Hollywood, but not for long.
