Wow. Ground breaking research done here in Auckland.

🦜 Just like our fingerprints can help identify us, birds can be identified by their toe pads! 🌊

In a dedicated Anthropology Palaeomolecular Lab at the University of Auckland, Auckland Museum Institute Postgraduate Scholar Patricia Pillay has been able extract genetic material from the parrot species 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘪 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 to reconstruct their genetic makeup 🧬

By taking small samples from historical 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘪 specimens in the Museum’s collection, Patricia has been able to find previously unknown genetic sequences which offer new perspectives on the diversity of Pacific parrot species. The samples she has collected have been added to global databases like GenBank, bridging the gap between past and present 🌎🦜
