Lazarus Chan: Poetics Policy
Inaugurating its new contemporary space, DE SARTHE is pleased to present Poetics Policy, its first solo exhibition for Hong Kong-based artist Lazarus Chan. Featuring an interconnected body of multimedia and interactive artworks, the immersive exhibition explores the nature of policy-making and the intricate ways in which it manifests in art, machine intelligence, and reality. An imagined simulation of the future, the exhibition is host to a living system built by AI but governed by the artist. Within this space, the essence of art lies not in the generated texts or imagery, but the policies that shape their creation.

Lazarus Chan’s solo exhibition “Poetics Policy” is currently on view at DE SARTHE until Nov15th.

"Scripting Me 24" (二四新通書) is a digital reimagining of the traditional Tung Shing (通勝), created with the China Large Language Model (QWEN 1.5 32B) and Asian cultural insights. It combines the ancient with the technological, reflecting on how LLM and AI are becoming the new Tung Shing. By sending questions and basic information about the artist to the model, every second of artist Lazarus Chan's 24-hour day is scripted and analysed, culminating in 86,400 unique messages that delve into scheduled activities and his concurrent thoughts. This project is an example of how language and technology continue to evolve and interact with our culture.

As LLMs become more accessible, Scripting Me 24 explores the transformation of ancient wisdom into contemporary digital forms, using Large Language Models (LLMs) as modern interpreters similar to the traditional Tung Shing. Historically, the Tung Shing served as a Chinese almanac that advised on auspicious dates and activities, using lunar cycles and astrology to guide decision-making for events such as weddings and funerals. Similarly, today's Large Language Models (LLMs) harness vast amounts of data to provide guidance and assistance in a variety of domains. They are used to generate text, answer questions, translate languages, assist with writing, and provide insights based on patterns in the data. In the future, we could see LLMs helping people like Tung Shing analyse their life events.

Memories, an impression of surroundings and feelings. Bit of Memory is an art collaboration with Hong Kong artist, Manny Yip. Manny Yip’s artwork records the memories about her childhood and family with a fluidity painting practice. Enhancing the mood of instability about memories.

Bit as the basic unit of information in computers, which can store types of data with different codex. Bit of Memory contains 18 signature paintings from Manny Yip’s collections, aiming to refabricate physical art pieces into raw and modifiable digital data. By analysing Manny Yip’s paintings with a customized program, millions of colour data were extracted into a single digital file for further processing.

Visualizing the digital data with generative brush actions and camera movement, a cinematic experience is created for future immersive installation. In short, Bit of Memory is a virtual memory palace generated with Manny Yip’s remembrance.

“Slitting dimensions, unfolding signal’s transference.”

Creation’s concepts frequently originated from daily experience and observation, recreating those phenomena surely is the craftsmanship in art. In the 21st century, which is an era of virtualization and digitization, physical skills are blending with digital technology, cooperating and enhancing each other. Those are some of the reasons why disclosing those digital phenomena as an intervention in art experience is justifiable.

“Digital Data”, colourless, shapeless and smelless, which is an essential of our daily surroundings. From the civil to military cell tower, signals are transmitted to every part of the city. With its endless evolution, ultimately it will be everywhere in the world. While the process of transmission is not noticeable and often faces different degrees of interference. Those remaining signal noise and energy lost, contains countless unknown.

Solo exhibition “D^4” as the The 13th Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme’s key event and Lazarus Chan’s Phase II development startup project. Aim to utilize digital technology to amplify innovative art experience and presenting the power of “Art x Tech” in a new media artwork. “D^4” is composed of large displays, allowing the audience to immerse in an imaginary three-dimensional space, interacting with the audience and reproducing the moment of signal transmission.

Exhibition Period : 17 August – 22 August 2021
