Founded by Pearl Lam, Pearl Lam Galleries is a driving force within Asia’s contemporary art scene. Pearl Lam Galleries presents museum-quality exhibitions that re-evaluate and challenge perceptions of cultural practice in Asia. With a thoughtfully balanced roster of Chinese and international artists, the gallery is strategic in its curation, positioning itself as an educator. With over 20 years of experience, the gallery continues to play a vital role in stimulating cross-cultural exchange between East and West. Arashi Tanaka () is the newest artist to join the Pearl Lam Projects roster, bringing together photography, sound and crystallisation in a distinctive exploration of time, memory and the natural world.⁠
⁠
Tanaka works with his own photographs of people and places, immersing them in a mineral-based solution that gradually forms crystals across the image. Sound — from a subject’s heartbeat or recordings of the surrounding environment — becomes an active force in the process, influencing the growth and final form of each work.⁠
⁠
For the fair, Tanaka presents works from his Portrait and Seascape series. In the Portrait works, crystals develop in response to the rhythm of a human heartbeat; in Seascape, coastal recordings and seawater-infused solutions connect the works to the environments they depict.⁠
⁠
The image is no longer simply captured or represented, but transformed through time into a physical, crystalline landscape.⁠

Pearl Lam Projects is pleased to present ‘Tender Ties’, an exhibition by Saudi artist Zahrah Al Ghamdi (.zahrah_alghamdi), at our Shanghai gallery.

Born in Al-Baha, in the mountainous southwest of Saudi Arabia, Al Ghamdi’s practice explores the relationship between landscape, memory and the traces of human presence. Drawing from the stone-and-mud agricultural communities among which she was raised, she approaches the landscape as a repository of lived experience, labour and heritage.

Her works bring together sand, rock, clay, leather, cotton, charcoal and plaster through processes of moulding, dyeing, stitching and layering. These materials carry histories of place and touch, becoming vehicles through which Al Ghamdi reflects on attachment, loss, resilience and the passage of time.

Her practice draws on Asir vernacular architecture, Al Sadu weaving, Al-Qatt Al-Asiri and Arabic classical literature. Across these references, she considers the psychological ties we form with places and one another, as well as the shifting relationship between the human body, organic matter and the ecosystems we inhabit.

At the heart of ‘Tender Ties’ is the human body—not as a fixed form, but as a state in constant movement between strength and fragility, openness and withdrawal, belonging and solitude, joy and sorrow.

Al Ghamdi’s work has been presented internationally, including at the 58th Venice Biennale, Desert X AlUla, Hayy Jameel Façade Commission and Art Basel Unlimited. Her works are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the British Museum.

For over four decades, Zhu Jinshi () has explored the possibilities of abstraction through an intensely material approach to painting. Best known for his “thick paintings”, Zhu builds layers of oil paint with palette knives and trowels, pushing painting beyond the picture plane and towards sculpture.⁠
⁠
Working between Berlin and Beijing, Zhu’s practice moves fluidly between painting and installation, with material, process and physicality at its centre.⁠
⁠
At Contemporary Istanbul, Zhu presents a selection of works including Eastern Tiles 1, 2 (2024). In this diptych, densely layered paint is built up into sculptural surfaces, allowing colour to exist as material rather than representation. The physical act of applying, moving and shaping paint becomes the subject of the work itself.⁠

For the fair, Adewale () presents works that bring together ancestral African symbolism, contemporary visual language and the material histories embedded within kilim rugs.⁠
⁠
Working directly onto the woven surface, Adewale transforms the rug from a traditional textile into an integral part of the image. Its patterns, textures and histories become active elements within compositions that move between figuration and geometric abstraction.⁠
⁠
In ‘Ancestral Gaze III’, fragmented planes evoke the visual language of African masks, while the layered surface of the kilim introduces a dialogue between memory, material and place.⁠

Pearl Lam Projects makes its debut at the 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul , presenting seven artists from China, Japan, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom. Featuring Alimi Adewale, Mr Doodle, Chisato Matsumoto, Qiu Anxiong, Su Xiaobai, Arashi Tanaka, and Zhu Jinshi, the presentation spans painting, object, textile, and photography, bringing together diverse artistic practices across generations and geographies.⁠

The lineup reflects the gallery’s commitment to cross-cultural exchange, as Istanbul's rich history as a meeting point between East and West closely resonates with the gallery’s ethos.⁠

Pearl Lam Projects will also be bringing a special site-specific installation by Chisato Matsumoto, transported all the way from Hiroshima, Japan, to the historic Tersane Istanbul. The work is presented as part of the Contemporary Istanbul Foundation’s Public Art Program and will be on view to all fair visitors. Titled ‘Sail of Light’, the work extends hand-bound shibori fabric across the space by means of ropes and pulleys, forming organic structures reminiscent of sails or wings. Their accumulation evokes the continuous movement of ships and people gathering at the harbour before setting out once again across the world. At the centre of the installation is a luminous form recalling the beacons that have long guided ships and travellers into port, fostering encounters and cultural exchange.⁠

Arashi Tanaka ()belongs to a new generation of artists whose practices challenge conventional boundaries between art, science, and the natural world. Pearl Lam first presented Tanaka’s work during his participation in the artist residency and exhibition programme at 70 Square Metres () in Shanghai, where he was selected as the fourth artist-in-residence. ⁠

: The exhibition’s title, ‘GREAT BEAUTY SPEAKS NOT: A Solo Exhibition by Arashi Tanaka’, reflects Tanaka’s artistic philosophy. During his residency in Shanghai, the quiet presence of nature, such as the dappled light in the residency studio, spring rain, and humid air, inspired a deeper meditation on how beauty speaks without words. Like classical Taoism, Tanaka’s crystals materialise silently, their forms shaped by the quiet rhythm and unseen vibrations.⁠
⁠
In his ‘Seascape series’, the coastal atmospheres are preserved through seawater-infused solutions and submerged sound recordings. To work with crystals is to capture a silent beauty that dissolves into the everyday.⁠

: “Within each piece, there are subtle images that emerge—traces, atmospheres, and a quiet presence. The viewer is invited to follow these impressions sensorially, encountering the unseen: a sound, a memory, a breath. It is within this silent resonance with nature that my work finds meaning.”⁠

During his career, Mr Doodle has constructed a whole new visual phenomenon: his DoodleLand, where he manifests his vision of the world, producing dense clusters of characters, objects and patterns that grow and multiply relentlessly.⁠

: ‘Mr Doodle in Love’ presents the everyday world of Mr Doodle and his doodles, which shine with love, joy, and happiness; it is both a celebration of the artist’s love story and recent marriage. Viewers were taken on a journey as dense clusters of black-and-white doodles were gradually tinted with an array of bright colours. ⁠

⁠In his Portrait series, the crystalline growth is guided by human heartbeats, translating intimate rhythms into visual topography. By leveraging the characteristics of crystallisation, which responds to vibrations and changes shape, he captures images of subjects through photography. The process involves growing crystals alongside the subject's heartbeat, preserving information that would naturally fade away. ⁠
