“In space you do almost all of your work with your hands,” says Scott Wray, who works at NASA and helps astronauts plan and execute space walks on the International Space Station. “today’s space workers use their hands as they work. This can present a problem, because when you drop something in orbit, it doesn’t fall—but it can quickly drift out of reach”. Off-Earth (2015-2021) is a film which explores human presence in space through objects that have been accidentally dropped or deliberately placed in space by the people who have travelled there. By using historical records, first-person accounts, mission films and observations from earth telescopes, Nixon has identified and collated an archive of dropped objects. Each dropped object has been reconstructed and represented in film and collectively presents a visual and cultural history of space debris through a human-centred taxonomy. https://www.dropped.space
A discussion with the artist, will also be conducted in the CITYA Screening.
