“In space you do almost all of your work with your hands,” says Scott Wray, who works at NASA and helps astronauts plan and execute space walks on the International Space Station. “today’s space workers use their hands as they work. This can present a problem, because when you drop something in orbit, it doesn’t fall—but it can quickly drift out of reach”. Off-Earth (2015-2021) is a film which explores human presence in space through objects that have been accidentally dropped or deliberately placed in space by the people who have travelled there. By using historical records, first-person accounts, mission films and observations from earth telescopes, Nixon has identified and collated an archive of dropped objects. Each dropped object has been reconstructed and represented in film and collectively presents a visual and cultural history of space debris through a human-centred taxonomy. https://www.dropped.space

A discussion with the artist, will also be conducted in the CITYA Screening.

‘OFF EARTH’
Single Channel film, 19: 38
2021

The First Work of Art on the Moon
The crew of Apollo 15 placed a small aluminum sculpture on the moon to memorialize those astronauts had died

Conceived and developed by British artist Louis Nixon Off-Earth (2015-2021) is a single channel film with sound which explores human presence in space through objects that have been accidentally dropped or deliberately placed in space by the people who have travelled there. By using historical records, first-person accounts, mission films and observations from earth telescopes, Nixon has identified and collated an archive of dropped objects. Each dropped object has been reconstructed and represented in film, and collectively presents a visual and cultural history of space debris through a human-centred taxonomy.

CHINESE VOICES
Video
10 minutes 34 seconds
2017

“Chinese Voices is a composition conceived exclusively for Asian voices. The timbres were gathered through an experiment on emotion and the voice and all its musical and emotional potential. Each participant was asked to associate a sound, a phrase, a motif, a warble that could express a particular emotion. I am trained in eventualism theory, and so first I carefully devised a method to catalogue and measure, and then I made attempts at a composition using a map, a compositional method I often use for instrumental compositions, but it was the first time I used it for a choir with sixty-four voices. The score relied in part on the map, a model of ten emotions. For example, beginning with FEAR, there are always nine possibilities, that provided for a number of values or emotional distances, where #1 is the most similar emotion and #9 the most oppositive, with all the intermediate nuances. There are sound and colours that correspond to each emotion, as we can see. All this is obtained experimentally, as is the result within the emotions, which are these values, that is the emotional distances. Chinese Voices is a wave which, little by little, proceeds into a flow, an enigma. made of great emotional contrasts, great clashes. With the will of let the spectators identify themselves with this flow of voices, as if they themselves were also participants, because these are the voices of each of us, non-musical voices. This grand choir of 64 voices becomes, in the some cases, extremely musical and extremely compelling. So it is a sort of stimulus that is constructed gradually through a technological system that informs them, via a headset, what they should interpret, or should I say recite. Obviously there will be interpretation and some mistakes, but that is part of what interpretation is, especially for students who are not musicians. That is the strong point of this piece.

RUMORS
video, photography
2021

Rumors is a site-specific project born in 2021 and consists in the detection of sounds that characterize an urban landscape and their representation in two different visual forms.

The first in the language of signs through their onomatopoeia, while the second in the visual representation of the pure digital data of the detected sound.

The idea is to enjoy the soundscape through another medium, offering the deaf people the opportunity to become aware of what characterizes that specific place, each sound session is therefore represented graphically in the same place.

The images are visible on billboards, while the videos are projected on a video wall.

The installations change according to the sign languages of the country where the project is developed.

Mat Toan (1976 Matera) is an artist who lives and works in Rome.

He attended the faculty of Electronic Engineering at the La Sapienza University of Rome and graduated with honors in Multimedia and Technological Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The complex relationship between Human being and Nature mediated by Technology is the concept behind his research. Topics such as the impact of technology on human life, Artificial Intelligence, Analog Reality / Virtual Reality and the way in which these are integrated in contemporary society, are investigated through the use of different languages ranging from the most classic, such as photography and video, multimedia installations up to interactive holograms. In 2017 he was selected for the Daunia Land Art artistic residency, curated by Giacomo Zaza, where he has the opportunity to create works of Land Art with the artist Làzaro Saavedra in the Gargano area. Subsequently he was selected to participate in the BoCs Art Cosenza artistic residency, curated by Alberto Dambruoso.

In the same year he was a finalist at the Combat Prize and finalist, with the work Do not forget about me created together with the artist Pamela Pintus, at the Cramum prize.
