[ April & May Flâneur Art Series schedule ]

🤡 Kids Art Tour (Age 6+)
📍 M+, West Kowloon
🗓️ 11, 18, 25 April & 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 May, 2026

Session 1: Is technology humanity’s failure? We will explore this question at Lee Bul’s exhibition at M+.
Session 2: Outdoor art making
(Each child will receive a zine and custom-made tools for the Art tours.)

This kids’ art tour based on Yuval Noah Harari’s reflections in 21st Century and Nexus: What will happen when algorithms understand us better than we understand ourselves, and how human agency can endure amid rapid technological change. How information networks shape shared realities, questioning whether the systems we build ultimately strengthen or destabilise humanity.

Through guided tours and critical reflection, children will explore futuristic worlds, fragile dreams, and big questions about our shared future.

Lee Bul (b. 1964, Seoul) is a leading contemporary artist whose started with performances, sculptures and immersive installations examine utopian ambition, technological progress, and the fragility of modern ideals.

The “Flâneur,” a concept that originated in 19th-century Paris, refers to an urban explorer and connoisseur of the streets. They wander aimlessly through the city, absorbing its sights, sounds, words, and other sensory experiences. This idea has had a significant impact on the fields of art, literature, and philosophy, inspiring numerous artists and writers to draw inspiration from the city’s streets, gardens, and cafes.

It is deeply compelling to witness the gradual transformation of a student’s visual language over time. In his most recent drawing, I am reminded of the expressive intensity associated with Fauvism. Observing this evolution is not simply about stylistic comparison; it is about recognizing the emergence of artistic identity.

What is particularly meaningful is his sustained engagement with a single subject. Through repeated observation and reinterpretation, he has demonstrated a remarkable dedication to process. By returning to the same object again and again, he moves beyond replication toward interpretation: refining perception, experimenting with form and color, and ultimately discovering his own distinctive voice.

This also remind me the idea of the “hundred languages of children” is especially relevant here: artistic development is seen as an evolving dialogue between thought, material, and expression. The repetition in his work is not redundancy, but research. It reflects sustained inquiry, reflective practice, and the gradual construction of meaning through visual exploration.

How wonderful to practice and learn with children every day.

Watching the child in art class today, I wasn’t just observing the child, I was seeing the parenting behind the child.

In today class, this shows up as exploration without fear. The child investigates, notices details, revisits his work, and problem-solves independently. When challenges arise, there is less avoidance and more persistence. Decision making feels thoughtful, not rushed. Curiosity leads the process, and the child is willing to stay with it.

What kind of play is shaping your child’s world right now?

Have you ever considered the diversity of play in your child’s day? Each form holds developmental significance and shapes cognition, emotion, and social understanding in distinct yet interconnected ways. Let’s take a closer look:

🤡 Artistic Play
Creative expression through colour, line, form, and texture fosters not only imagination but emotional articulation and aesthetic awareness.

🌱 Sensory Play
Engagement with raw materials like sand, water, clay to supports neural development by grounding learning in the immediacy of touch, scent, and physical response.

🖐🏼 Fine Motor Play
Precision tasks refine hand-eye coordination, essential foundations for artistic practice and written language alike.

🎲 Rule-Based Play
Games with structures and rules nurture critical thinking, cooperation, and the emergence of ethical frameworks.

🔁 Mastery Play
Through repetition, children internalise control, refine technique, and gradually construct autonomy—mirroring artistic studio processes.

🏗 Construction Play
Manipulating form and space: Be it with blocks or recyclables, is an early architecture, a tangible rehearsal of three-dimensional thinking.

🎭 Make-Believe Play
Narrative, roleplay, and performance are not only imaginative expressions but early engagements with empathy, identity, and semiotics.

🍏Symbolic Play
This is the origin of metaphor, where real-world experience becomes reimagined through form.

🗣 Language Play
Rhyme, pun, and playful dialogue ignite linguistic agility, storytelling, and the poetics of speech.

The funniest comments I get from my art school friends when I share my students’ work:

“Are you trying to turn your students into Basquiat?”
“Creating a new art educational cult? Lol”

First off, I love he’s in my top 5 for sure. But let’s be real, I can’t teach my little ones to draw like him.

What I really do is pinch my thigh and keep my mouth zipped try not to give comments when they are still in the development process but observe their drawings, make some fun hypotheses and introduce different perspectives.

Check out this piece from a 3yo boy! I just flipped it upside down, picked out a tiny spot of color, and added few black lines on top of his drawing.
