At Lamma Island Dino Park, we love bringing things back to life. That's why we jumped at the opportunity to lead a Mangrove seed planting trip in So Kwu Wan. The AFCD has identified over 60 locations around Hong Kong where Mangroves are found, but Lamma Island is not on their list. The closest location to Lamma is Tai Tam in Hong Kong Island. Nevertheless, during the summer months, Mangrove seed pods wash up on the beaches around Lamma Island.
Over the weekend, we collected over 50 seed pods from Powerstation Beach, and this morning, we planted them in So Kwu Wan. Honestly, we were not optimistic about our chances of success, but that has changed after discovering a few isolated Mangrove plants and one sand bank with an established root system. We also identified another inlet near Lo So Shing village, which would be another ideal location. We'll definitely be back again to plant more this Summer.
In reality, many of the Mangrove seeds will fail to grow into trees. Their success comes through sheer number of seeds, so if you would also like to help out, don't hesitate to try it yourself. We recommend the stream behind the bridge in So Kwu Wan. The stream behind the beach Pavillion in front of Lo So Shing Village, and if the dogs aren't around, you could try the large flat area in front of the footbridge in So Kwu Wan.
