HASS Lab

HASS Lab

HASS Lab

Founded by visual artist Pak Sheung Chuen and Cherry Chan, HASS Lab is a collective of artists and cross-disciplinary producers dedicated to advocating art and artist thinking as a new way of understanding and valui

ng society. Through working with educators, social workers and other community organisations, it builds programs that present an alternative perspective on abilities and success of socially marginalized communities.

A wonderful wrap-up to Art Basel Hong Kong 2026! We are truly grateful to have brought HASS Lab’s “Borderless Brain Bank — Neurodivergent Visual Databank” to the fair this year.

Throughout this inspiring week, it was a joy to see so many visitors pause and engage with the showcase. By juxtaposing images from the M+ Sigg Collection with the works of neurodivergent participants, we aimed to reimagine the possibilities of artistic interpretation and public engagement.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our longtime partners, the speakers who shared their profound insights with us, and every new friend who visited the HASS Lab booth or joined our “DIY | Unleashing Creativity through Limits: 3D Edition” workshop💛

👋🏻A warm welcome to all our new followers! Although the physical exhibition at Art Basel has come to a close, the “Borderless Brain Bank” project is only moving forward. Stay tuned for our upcoming developments and future collaborations!

HASS Lab

Our final featured XO Artist is Tang Chi Wai, known for constructing vivid scenes with meticulous lines. His works were also shown at Eaton HK’s Consciousness Festival in “The Universe in a Tip,”. As part of the acceleration program, he and his mentor visited Sham Shui Po, the Hong Kong Railway Museum in Tai Po, and the island Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung to sketch and observe on site.

Tang Chi Wai: “Went to Railway Museum and life sketching at Yim Tin Tsai, I was so happy I got to ride boats.”

Mentor Un Cheng: “He usually creates in set formats, looking at images then creating on A4 size paper, sometimes writing words and symbols– I am most interested in these elements. I want to guide him to get out of his usual modes of creation, and I also want to take this opportunity to take him to different places, so he can enter real life scenarios and not just secondary reality in images. I gave him a film camera so that he can capture scenarios he likes without seeing his own creations immediately. This is different from the immediacy of his look-and-draw practice, and he enjoys the clicking sounds of the camera shutter. After spending time with him, I see that he is someone who needs to move around. He is particularly sensitive to architecture and arrangement. I believe that taking him to different places will help his creative work.”

Tiennie Chan (Art Development Officer, TWGHs Mok Law Sui Wah Integrated Vocational Rehabilitation Centre): “Drawing is a habit of Chi Wai’s, a personal way of recording his life. I believe that for him, drawing doesn't require him to think about what constitutes a ‘good work.’ From my time with him and my observations, I feel that he is more interested in things related to transportation, which can guide him in exploring composition and image.”

We’re in the final week of the exhibition. Come visit and leave a message for the XO Artists in our guest book!

Selected from last year’s open call, Tsang Hoi Lung stood out among numerous submissions with his non-painting-based practice, demonstrating a strong conceptual approach and a distinctive observational perspective. For this exhibition, he completed two new installation works under the guidance of mentors.
Hoi Lung: “As a bridge connecting to what I want to express in my heart, any work with an appropriate expression is a good work.”
Mentor Rosan Li: “Hoi Lung likes to collect odds and ends from the workshop. We thought we could take apart a few ceiling fans, assemble various parts into different shapes, and build up things left and right in the workshop, just like playing an ever changing game! There he seems to enjoy making some 'larger' things, but when we went to look at miniature art exhibitions, he paid more attention to the details of the figurines and figures.”
Mentor Tang Kwok Hin: “During the program, his workshop underwent major renovations, so the theme this time serendipitously focused on the materials dismantled from the workshop, and the workshop itself. He may not always be able to clearly articulate his thought process and ideas, but he actually possesses specific preferences and feelings. In his current trial works, one recreates the space after the workshop's transformation with cabinet doors; the other is a direct arrangement of the items he collected at the workshop, from the largest to the smallest. He is in a creatively malleable state and still has room for development. It is evident that he is sensitive to the physical properties of objects, and he especially likes to explore creative possibilities by 'preserving the greatest attributes of the objects themselves.”
Tomorrow, 28/12, the “XO Artists Led Tour & Workshop” will be led by Hoi Lung and Kai Yeung. Last chance to register—link: https://shorturl.at/eFlO4

Day 2: Introducing XO Artist Tang Kai Yeung. Kai Yeung’s works were shown at Eaton HK’s Consciousness Festival in “The Universe in a Tip,” and more recently in the “Far Far Stories” of RE: Tai Kok Tsui.

Kai Yeung: “After exchanging ideas with artists, I still create nostalgic paintings. I feel that communicating with artist mentors makes me want to delve deeper into the style and characteristics of nostalgic buildings, allowing me to focus more intently on depicting them.”

Mentor Tang Kwok Hin: “Due to his work and family situation, Yeung is drawing less these days. As his artistic style is quite developed, so I mainly want to reignite his passion in drawing. The first time we walked around his neighborhood in Yau Ma Tei, took some photos and just drew together. The second time we walked around my neighborhood, and again we took photos and drew. He said with someone by his side, he could focus a bit more on drawing, and he has started a series on the wholesale fruit market. Also he specifically mentioned he would like to come draw at my studio at some point. I think what I can do is to keep him company in the creative process.”

After the acceleration program, Kai Yeung reflects: “Profound interaction with Tang Kwok Hin. When he took me to see Kat Hing Wai it felt like time travel to an old walled village; as I enjoy drawing nostalgic architecture and being in the countryside, I felt very comfortable.”

This Sunday, 28/12, the “XO Artists Led Tour & Workshop” will be led by Kai Yeung and Hoi Lung. Don’t miss it—register via the link https://shorturl.at/eFlO4
