“What do I put in it?” is a question my lidded jars often provoke. In reply, I used to say “put yourself in it”, which was not a direct reference to burial pots, but more to the fundamental relationship we have with objects.

My jars symbolise a freedom both in the making and in their use. The expression is not restricted because the function is not defined. They demand the imagination of the owner to form an identity, while preserving the ethos of the burial vessel. The deepest meaning is always found in the original purpose.

otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE is pleased to present Containment, a solo exhibition by British potter Steve Harrison. Harrison’s latest biscuit firings of salt-glazed clay take on a full flourish of forms — lidded jars, mugs, tea bowls, beakers, plates, water bottles, candlesticks, and sunflower sculptures — while remaining rooted in a language of form and surface shaped over decades.

The title Containment explores our relationship with the precious. On encountering Harrison’s works, a question arises: are these works meant to be behind glass, restrained and contained? His pots suggest otherwise.They are not made to be kept at a distance, but become whole through touch, routine, and the intimacy of daily use. Pause to behold beauty and care in Harrison’s deliberate making: subtle thumb indentations, sprig-moulded relief details, pitted orange-peel patinations.

While Harrison’s work has earned high acclaim internationally, his attention remains with the hands his pieces ultimately pass into.Through proportion, weight, surface, and form, his works ask to be encountered physically as much as visually — they belong to the hand as much as the eye.Through these vessels, the exhibition considers how art can enter daily life without losing depth.A pot may appear familiar, even mundane, but each holds the quiet power to alter the rhythm of a day.

Harrison’s pots are precious reminders to notice beauty: in use, in stillness, in the ordinary rituals that gather around them. Containment is therefore not about what an object contains, but what it makes room for: ceremony, intimacy, memory, and a more considered way of being with the things and people around us.

otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE is pleased to present Study of Stools: Form, Balance, Utility by Bobby Mills, his third solo exhibition centring on the object that first shaped his practice. Featuring eighteen unique, one-off stools in various kinds of wood, this collection continues Mills’ exploration of utility as sculpture.

Rooted in the vernacular of everyday life, the stool embodies a democratic history of anonymous design—evolving through necessity rather than theory. For Mills, it represents the enduring idea that simplicity can outperform complexity: a platform through which balance, proportion, and form are continuously tested. Influenced by childhood evenings spent beside a fireplace hearth, where an antique milking stool stood as a quiet constant, the works carry both personal memory and collective tradition.

Exhibited in Hong Kong, the stools are made in dialogue with the histories and craftsmanship of shoe-shining stools. Responding intuitively to the swirling grain and character of salvaged wood, no two pieces are alike. Each is hewn, charred, and finished by hand—existing as a uniquely considered work of functional sculpture.

In “reunion”, Alia Sugawara distills the quiet intensity at the heart of Konketsu into a single, meditative gesture. Created with sumi ink she painstakingly hand-ground in Hong Kong—pursuing the deepest, purest black—the work embodies her disciplined devotion to process: “If you mess up, you start over.” The composition unfolds in layered darkness across delicate paper, where fragility and force meet in poised suspension. Within its inky depths, butterfly forms seem to hover between light and shadow, serene yet vigilant, capturing Sugawara’s vision of duality—where beauty and tension, softness and strength, coexist in a state of restless harmony.

otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE is pleased to present Hornfels, a solo presentation by Japan-based artist Masaya Kushino. Rooted in geological transformation and personal introspection, the exhibition introduces a new body of work that draws from the material and symbolic resonance of stone. The title refers to hornfels—a rock formed through the contact metamorphism of mudstone and sandstone under the intense heat of underground magma—serving as both material reference and metaphor. As sediment is altered by heat and pressure, so too are the elements of one’s life reshaped by emotion, conflict, and experience.

Working with washi paper and sumi ink, Sugawara harnesses the natural bleeding and absorption of ink to reflect these tensions. The profound blacks are not mere voids but immersive spaces where life and death converge. The softness of the paper holds both ferocity and grace, mirroring the dualities of the beings she portrays. Through hanging scrolls, folding screens, and mounted works, Konketsu cultivates an atmosphere of contemplative intensity.
