I went to the Bucheon City Hall station to record Yun and Elena in her apartment. Yun Invited Elena from Busan to play the session together with her. Yun had a room just for sound baths and their gongs and bowls were already setup.

"Brahmarandra: The Sound Of Healing Light"

They were going to play a single 40-minute session and to help them plan for it, they made a very organized 3-page script so that they knew what they were going to play. The script was very formal and outlined the theme, structure, timestamps, and instruments. Interestingly, it included a column for their own personal intentions that they would be mindful of when they were playing each section.

Even with the script it was a beautiful, seamless improvised experience. A wonderful story. Sound bath as art.

I preserved the dynamics of the recording so keep the volume comfortable in the beginning, when the gong comes in it will be loud.

This track had a wonderful, slow beginning with sparse tones to introduce the characters in this performance. The track becomes more active when he uses the bow and other metal and wood mallets to play the bowls, creating stark, ripping tones to show the other side of metal bowls. The session was a roller coaster of loud and quiet, soft and hard sounds.

'Possibility'

After Azmi's sessions Swami Arun @ arrived with Maddy. I contacted him last year when I learned that he was visiting Hong Kong. Unfortunately, I was not able to record him and I was so happy that our paths crossed once again to finally do it.

His journey began when he had an epiphany working as a photographer in Australia. 'Go learn the Digeridoo' was the message and so he did. He had a similar epiphany in India to learn singing bowls, and so he did. After several years, he heard his first gong in Japan and that was it. He taught himself the gong and eventually developed his own style called 'cosmic gong' or 'hypnoloop cosmic gong'.

Swami pushes limits of the gongs. Using different mallets, objects, and movements he discovers the hidden 'possibilities' of the gong. He has an amazing control of sound, like a sculptor with clay, molding it into new shapes and experiences.

This session left me with my mouth agape. I didn't know what I had just experienced.

I recorded Dennis in his studio in the Sanxia District near the National Taipei University. He is Nepalese and has been living in Taiwan for many years. He sells metal singing bowls from his studio. You can feel the slowness of life here, and it reflects in his sessions.

We had a great conversation between sessions, and he dispelled some of the myths that intimidated me about singing bowls and sound baths, mainly that it is just sound and any spiritual connections to Shakras, etc., are purely up to the beliefs of the individual. With less doubt on my shoulders, I feel that I can fully connect with sessions on my own terms and not feel like I am missing out on some deeper meaning.

Dennis's style is slow and precise. He strikes each bowl and lets it fade to silence, allowing you to listen to the entire life of each sound. Some of the bowls have inherent harmonics that modulate its sound, changing over time as they decay into silence.

Sound Bath Sessions 226: Missy Liu & Morrison Su. Taipei, Taiwan.

We all met at 7pm at Missy's studio is in the Datong District of Taipei near Dihua Street. They usually play together so their style, mood, and personalities are perfectly matched. Each of them focused on their instruments as well as being mindful of the entire recording. Their improvisation had a great dialog, taking turns to create a new sound then playing with it to see where it would take them.

All of their instruments were placed along the walls so I put my microphone in the middle of the room. Morrison sat in the front and played metal bowls and shakers. Missy was more mobile playing the shamanic drum, metal bowls, and the gong which was behind me.

This track is their longer 40-minute session where they played many instruments around the room. The moving sounds create an interesting stereo experience. Some passing conversations and motor bikes also drive past.

Sound Bath Sessions 182: Fei Jen Tsai. Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

https://insighttimer.com/sbsessions/guided-meditations/sound-bath-sessions-182-fei-jen-tsai

Fei's session was one of the most memorable recordings of the Sound Bath Sessions project. Everything was just.. right.

We recorded in her small studio in Kaohsiung. It was a large carpeted open space with many bowls lining the walls. There were three setups already chosen for the recording.

This was the one. This was the one that put me over. As if the world stopped just to hear her play.

This final session left me in tears and for a while I thought about why and how sound could do this to me. The bowls she chose just had such a pure, soft, sound that connected with me, with the entire experience, so perfectly. The sound was low, the drones holding me like a warm hand. New shapes created with every strike. It filled my ears and my breath. The way the soft warm wind wafted through the window kissing each hair of my skin. The sun diffused through sheer curtains neither hot nor cold.

She was invisible, I was alone.
It was just- perfect.

Sound Bath Sessions 242: Siyeon Ham. Seoul, Korea.

Siyeon was my last recording in Korea. She met me at Wonjong Station at around 9 pm, and we recorded at her apartment in a quiet neighborhood nearby. The room was small, so the sound was very direct and intimate. Siyeon played large quartz bowls and an ocean drum for her sessions.

It was interesting listening to these recordings again in the edit. There was a progression from the first to the last recording. The first session was active and bold, the second session was melodic and slow, and the third session's ocean drum was just a beautiful bed of calming white noise. It was like the journey of a person during a sound bath, starting with a complicated, busy mind, then slowly calming down until you reach a much simpler state and feeling.

The ocean drum in this track actually sounded like a heavy rainstorm in a typhoon. I never had that feeling before from an ocean drum. Wind and power. A great finale to my trip in .
