INTRODUCING GTOPIA: GAME KITCHEN

Game Kitchen is a collective effort to establish a communal hub in Hong Kong; people can connect to games and play, could meet each other, and share professional, creative and personal experiences in making games. We meet at Current Plans, a vanguard art space in Sham Shui Po every first and third Thursday.

The space is equipped with multiple gaming consoles, VR devices, and screens. A series of talks, workshops and performances are curated for the first Thursday evening of each month throughout 2022 when designers, artists, players, musicians, and researchers present their work and conduct experiments focused on games.

Every third Thursday of the month, Game Kitchen is designated a safe, powerful space for women interested in games. The space is set up as a comfortable corner in the city, where women could come and set up, share, and play their games – be it a paper demo, or a slice of a bigger project. We also invite female practitioners from arts, industry and academia to perform as mentors in these sessions.

This year-long programme is supported by Goethe-Institut Hongkong, and curated by Yang Jing, a writer, curator and designer in the intersection of game and art. It is co-organised by Eunice Tsang, curator of Current Plans, and Mario Bobbio, creative designer of Current Plans.

South Ho
Heaviness and Lightness, 2021
EVA foam, 20cm x 10cm x 5.5cm

Something that carries so much weight, that cannot be easily carried; transformed into work that is light-hearted and frivolous, yet so wrought with burden.

When the time comes, let them go; let us fly in freedom for a moment longer.

FAULT LINES
Opening on 1/10, 7-10pm

As thin as hair, or so large as to be visible from space, fault lines are geological phenomena of displacement created from tectonic movements, resulting in fractures that open up the skin of the earth. This planar splintering acts as the premise of this exhibition, which investigates the concept of ‘fault lines’ as a material and symbolic construct through artworks that are mostly made from construction materials such as concrete, marble, zip ties, wire, grout, and foam. Some installations are intentionally barely visible at first glance, examining the reliability of our pre-existing belief structures, and evoking the emotional challenges of navigating an unsteady ground. Some play on the pun of ‘fault’, a misalignment which insinuates a binary positioning of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, questioning the potential of culpability. Some focus on the interplay between material and the site, using the specificity of the space to contemplate ideas about building, cracking, mending, misaligning and reconstructing. Ultimately, the core of the works lies in a potentiality where forms mutate and meanings alter: at times imperceptibly slow, at times violently sudden, like the restless earth under our feet.
