Congratulations to our artist Wang Keping, who is featured on the newspaper of !

We are proud to share the exhibition of Wang Keping At Work at the Musée Rodin in Paris, from May 3rd to June 5th, 2022!

Close to nature, just like Rodin was, Wang Keping will be working live under the audience’s eye, on four monumental sculptures in the making, in the vast space of the under forest. Wang Keping works straight from whole tree trunks, from which he knows how to conjure up sensual forms, full of emotion and poetry. This invitation, a first for the musée Rodin, is a unique chance for the public to discover the artist in action and the artwork in the making.

Wang Keping was born near Beijing in 1949, into an educated, cultured family. Prevented by political censorship from fulfilling his artistic dreams, he co-founded the Chinese avant-garde ‘Stars’ group in 1979. Following government suppression of their first exhibitions, he moved to France in 1984 and went on to develop a very personal sculptural language combining the manual dexterity he values so highly, mastery of Chinese tradition, and a highly contemporary expressiveness.

31 Women Artists - Hong Kong, curated by Caroline Ha Thuc [Part I]

💖Thank you to all your support and visit to our opening last week! We look forward to seeing you again!

31 Women Exhibition was a 1943 exhibition organized by Peggy Guggenheim in her new gallery, Art of this Century, in New York City. One of the first exhibitions dedicated to the works of women, the show was a breakthrough. 31 Women Artists – Hong Kong Exhibition is not intended to be a feminist exhibition: ideally, there would be no need for all-women exhibitions, yet it seems meaningful today to acknowledge the practice of women Hong Kong artists and to show the extraordinary vitality of their works. Mixing different generations of artists working in diverse contexts and engaged in various practices, this 2022 exhibition aims above all at celebrating the right to be truly oneself.

💙💛Last month, Huang Rui attended a special event called "Together for Peace( 共向和平)", organized by multiple diplomats in a country where the authorities refuse to use the word "invasion" to describe the incident in Ukraine. 🇺🇦

The most important painting, "Absence of Black Moon (黑月之缺)", made by Huang Rui three days after the outbreak, was presented by Ukrainian and Polish embassies in Beijing.

Mr. Wojciech Zajaczkowski, The Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, was holding hands with Ms. Zhanna Leshchynska, charge d'affaires at the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing in front of the painting, as a gesture of solidarity and calling for peace.

We will be honored to show this painting at this year’s Art Basel in May. 🇭🇰

The Ruins of Yuanmingyuan, by Huang Rui, is composed of two paintings, which were first shown on the fence outside the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, on September 27, 1979.

The first, entitled “Yuanmingyuan, Last Testament (圓明園:遺囑)”, depicts the stone relics of the destroyed garden as white skeletons. The second is “Yuanmingyuan, Rebirth (圓明園:新生)”, where bathed in the sunlight and standing erect in front of white clouds, the ruins transformed into giant funguses of young men and women.

The two paintings are distinguishing back to the time when social realism was dominant. It has announced, together with other 22 artists from The Stars exhibition, the emergence of an avant-grade movement in post Cultural Revolution China.

The ruins of Yuanmingyuan is both specific and symbolic. A Qing imperial palace was thoroughly looted and destroyed by the Eight-Power Allies Force. It also refers to death, after Chinese culture went into its darkest period in history. Under such background, Huang Rui’s paintings seem to be romantic and symbolic overtone, and they revealed his deep sorrow and bitter hope for tomorrow. “I have to embark on destruction from that specific spot , but i also need a process of reconstruction.” Huang Rui once said.

The ruins later became the social gathering and poetry reading places for young poets and singers to celebrate China’s rebirth.

A poem written by Jiang He was accompanied by Huang Rui’s paintings at The Stars exhibition:

The wine flays,
The Rain beats down,
Faint images appear on the wall
-Showing broken arms, hands and faces
風剝蝕著,雨敲打著
模模糊糊的形象在牆上顯露
-殘缺不全的胳膊,手和面孔

The ship lashes,
The darkness bites,
Ancestors and brothers worked with bare hands and heavy hearts,
To instill their silence into this wall
鞭子抽打著,黑暗啄食著
祖先和兄弟們的手沈重的勞動
把自己默默無聲地壘進牆壁

Once again I come here,
But to rebel against a slave’s fate
Another furious death will shake down the dust on the wall
Letting the silent dead rise again and shout
我又一次來到這裡
反抗被奴役的命運
用激烈的死亡震落牆上的泥土
讓默默死去的人們站起來叫喊

🪵👁 I love reading Wang Keping’s new monograph! It starts with a short but insightful introduction written by Ai Weiwei : “…In the realm of direct carving, sculptors comparable to Wang Keping are few and far between. His work is unified yet autonomous. The system he has created is his and his alone (从单纯的雕刻范畴来谈,雕刻家可以跟王克平相比照的,少之又少,它完整,独立,自成体系).”

It is a comprehensive, comparative and in-depth study of Keping’s sculpting careers dates to back 1970 till today.

You can come to gallery to read or purchase when you are free!

The face mask that I might wanna wear the most🐲. It is used for Nuo (儺), a ritual for the ancients to remove ill fortune and prey for blessings since the Pre-Qin Period. The shamanistic culture and the primitive totems on the masks shed the light on the world of witches (巫觋), who can communicate with ancient gods and animals through dancing, chanting and worshiping. I guess I have found the best mask for beauty, illusion, civilization, and mystery all in one. 👁👁

🪵🔥The life of wood is rising from the flames. Wang Keping is outstanding in terms of exploiting the wood to the full, injecting his personal sensations. The work will eventually evolve and alter themselves. He let them explain themselves.
