Happy 60th Independence, Guyana 🇬🇾 My Country. My home.

Guyana was not always an independent country.
The history of Guyana’s independence is rooted in centuries of colonisation, resistance, political struggle and the development of national identity.

A major turning point occurred after World War II, marked by the growth of nationalist movements.

During the struggle for independence, important figures such as Cheddi Jagan, Janet Jagan, and Forbes Burnham strongly advocated for the country’s independence, equality, equality, and social reform.
Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South America, gained its independence from the United Kingdom on May 26, 1966. Before independence, Guyana was known as British Guiana and was governed by the British for over 150 years.

On May 26, 1966, the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted as the national flag for the first time, symbolising unity, strength and the country’s rich natural resources.

Other important events included the lowering of the British Union Jack, celebrations across the country, and the transfer of governmental authority to Guyanese leadership.
Guyana’s independence represented political self-rule, the end of colonial governance, national pride and identity and the ability to shape its own economic and social development.

Today, Independence Day is celebrated annually on May 26 with flag-raising ceremonies, reflections on the country’s journey and achievements, cultural performances, parades, patriotic events and community celebrations across the country. Independence remains one of the most important milestones in Guyanese history.

This year is especially significant, as Guyana celebrates its 60th Independence Anniversary, a major milestone that reflects six decades of freedom, resilience, cultural diversity and national development. It is a time for Guyanese at home and abroad to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for independence and to celebrate the nation’s progress and achievements over the years.
