The United Nations Development Programme - UNDP in extends its warmest congratulations to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana on its 60th Independence Anniversary.

Since Guyana’s independence in 1966, UNDP has proudly partnered with the Government and people of Guyana in advancing the country’s development journey. From the earliest agreements that laid the foundation for cooperation in 1966 to the 1977 Standard Basic Assistance Agreement, which continues to guide our work, this partnership has been built on trust, national ownership, and shared commitment to progress.

Over the past six decades, this collaboration has supported efforts to strengthen institutions, expand opportunities, protect the environment, and improve lives across Guyana.

As Guyana celebrates this important milestone, reaffirms its commitment to supporting sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development. We look forward to continuing this partnership and working together to build a prosperous and equitable future for all.

Guyana’s rainforest is one of our greatest assets - and protecting it starts with how we operate within it.

On this International Day of Biodiversity, we’re highlighting the importance of keeping our environment in mind in every economic activity in Guyana – especially mining. Responsible mining isn’t just a best practice, it is essential to preserving our forests, waterways, wildlife and future of the industry while supporting economic growth.

Under the MBIM Project, we continue working with partners and miners to ensure that development and conservation go hand in hand.

2026 Theme: Acting Locally for Global Impact - Because the choices we make in our mining practices today will shape the health of our ecosystems tomorrow.

Let’s continue to recognise the value, protect, and invest in our biodiversity for today and generations to come.
